Another bloodcurdling scream. This one came from the ghost’s assigned area. Twisting around, I peered into the gathered amounts of brush and trees, trying to make out
anything that could be a Proto. Even with my infrared scanner for my suit on full power, I couldn’t see anything that could be distinguished. The Protos knew we were
coming, and we knew they knew. Unfortunately for us, the AGT(Alliance of Terran Governments) didn’t believe so. I shook my head. The fools, they always thought that
we were invincible, that our cloaking technology would keep us from anything. But it didn’t, especially not the Protos. Those stupid governing officials didn’t know the
field like my team and I did. They had never seen one of their own cut down by the mental energy blades, the look of confident immortality vanishing as they were sliced
open mercilessly. They didn’t know that, compared to most of the equipment that the Proto had, our tech level was nothing. They knew none of that. All they knew was
how to give orders, sit back, and relax. Hell, they didn’t even have strategic battle plans! All we were to do was surround the Proto base and attack, as if they’d never
have a clue we were there. I flinched as I heard yet another terrible scream echo through the night. This one was amongst my group, and I knew that if I wasn’t careful,
I’d be next. Raising my assault rifle, I prepared myself for the worst. My HUD was on maximum intensity, examining everything that could possibly be a threat. All it
picked up was my own men. To my horror, I realized that, out of my entire team of five ghosts, three firebats, eleven marines, and one Goliath, we only had one firebat and
five marines left. Even the Ghosts had been taken out! The Goliath had gone ahead from a different tactical position in order to take them by surprise. I cursed the
blasted official that had decided to send only two teams-my own and Lt. Chenner’s-to disable an entire Proto base. It was only a training base, certainly, but still too
much of a job for such a small amount of military units. Over the comm unit in my helmet, I warned the rest of my group to stay together, and watch one another’s backs.
I knew this would be hell. As if out of nowhere, a blast of teal psionic energy flashed past me and demolished a large boulder beside me. I thanked God that some Proto
had bad aim as I instinctively activated my cloaking unit and dove towards a nearby ditch. Keying my comm and activating my infrared, I ordered my troops to continue on
towards the base. Scanning the area, I soon located the Proto bastard. Luckily, he hadn’t given up when he realized that he missed me. Hefting my assault rifle to my
shoulder, I took careful aim, and................ WHAM!! As though by an invisible gigantic hand, I was slammed into a tree. My cloaking system shut down on the impact.
Dazed, I shook my head to clear my thoughts, and as my vision came into focus, I saw a High Templar standing not ten feet from my position. "Crap!" I thought, when I
recognized what it was. I knew that I couldn’t stand up long against a High Templar like that, and that I’d soon be dead. Shutting my eyes tightly, I braced for the pure
mental energy that would soon consume me. But after a few minutes, nothing was happening. I dared to open one eye, and saw that the Proto was standing directly in
front of me. A voice in my head spoke: "Prepare yourself, human, for enlightenment. You will become one of us, and be raised to a power such as your kind has never
known. Congratulations." It placed a hand against my forehead, and I suddenly felt dizzy. The world spun around me as I felt delicate mental fingers reshaping my mind.
Summoning up as much of the meager strength that I had left, I raised my rifle and jammed it into the ribcage of the Proto. "Sorry, I kind of enjoy my human flaws." I said
as I pulled the trigger. At that range, the Proto’s shields didn’t hold up well, and collapsed after the first few rounds. The Proto collapsed shortly after, a glowing ooze
protruding from the gaping wound that was in his chest. Still a bit dizzy, I spat on the body, then half ran, half limped to rejoin my comarades. They were already at the
base. As they heard me coming, they immediately twisted around, aiming their weapons at my head. I raised my hands. "Hey boys, it’s just me! Calm down!" They
lowered their weapons and exclaimed "Sir! We thought you wouldn’t make it!" "What’s the status of the attack?" said I. "We don’t know sir. Our Goliath is at the aft
of the base, but we haven’t been able to locate any of Chenner’s men in the whole area. We think they may have been terminated." said my first officer. "I wouldn’t be
surprised. That was a High Templar attacking us back there." I replied as I studied the situation. Minimal infantry and vehicles, zero air support, and inadequate
weaponry. I would consider it impossible, except my Academy training erased that word from my vocabulary. Looking over the base, I spotted the Proto Gateway and the
various Nexus’ surrounding it. Knowing that the Gateway was the focal point for the majority of their mental power, I told my troops, "Okay, I want all marines to charge
directly in, blowing the ass off of anything that’s not human. You, the firebat, you and the Goliath head straight for the Gateway there, and concentrate everything you’ve
got on it. Take out any Protos trying to stop you, but try not to waste too much ammo and power. Everyone got that?" "Yes sir!" They shouted. "Okay then," I said,
"Attaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccckkkkkkk!!!!!!!!" With my small group of marines, we charged down the hill, cloaked, with our assault rifles blazing. Protoss came swarming out
almost immediately. Realizing we needed better firepower, I pulled out my grenade launcher and fired several nape grenades(of my own design) into the Proto riot. Shields
collapsed, alien bodies were scorched and burned, the stink of charred flesh was in the air. Over my comm, I heard the voice of my remaining firebat saying, "I love the
smell of napalm." Looking up, I saw him and the Goliath charging at top speed towards the Gateway. I smiled as I watched them, only to suddenly hear the crackle of
mental energy and feel a burning sensation in my back! Twisting around, there was a Zealot standing there, it’s energy blades flashing. If I hadn’t turned when I did, he
probably would’ve broken through my armor and killed me. I blasted my assault rifle at him. He was knocked back by the shots, but his shields held. Firing several
more times, his shielding fell and so did he. Turning my rifle in all directions, I started firing like a madman, to little avail as the Proto shields protected them. As they were
closing around me, I panicked, knowing that we were outnumbered, and that we would lose if we didn’t take out their psionic establishment. Suddenly, they stopped,
cleared a path, and allowed five High Templars to walk into the clearing that was made. Confused, I took the chance to steal a glance at the progress of the Goliath and
firebat. To my horror, I saw the pilot of the Goliath lying dead on the ground, and the firebat battling hopelessly with a Templar. I turned back to the five High Templars in
front of me, and noticed that they were peculiarly huddled very close together. They continued to squeeze closer even as I watched. I blinked, thinking there was
something wrong with my eyes, as they seemed to all become attached. Soon, they had morphed together as one big blob. I glanced over to the Gateway once more,
and saw the firebat laying dead. The Gateway was damaged, but still functioning as I saw the Templar race over to join the watching crowd. I turned back just in time to
see the High Templar/blob ignite in a flash of brilliant light. Even as my helmet adjusted and filtered the sudden flash accordingly, it was still very bright. I could barely
make out a large figure in the midst of the light, but nothing more than a sillouhette. It reminded me of an old story I once heard about something called an Archon unit,
something with unimaginable power, almost godlike. I always dismissed it as a fairy tale, but at this moment I wasn't so sure................... The figure made a slight motion
with its hands. Abruptly, the ground beneath me trembled and rose, morphing to shapes that spun me around, flung me everywhere, and slammed into me. I could barely
distinguish what was happening. What looked like a giant fist stretched from the ground, trying to squash me flat. I rolled out of the way just in time. It stretched up
again, then came at me again. I was too tired to dodge this time. Knowing my time had come, I prepared for the end........................ As though it was never there, the
rocky fist dissapated. The glow from the large figure also dissapated, and the figure exploded into five High Templars. Looking around, I noticed that the energy blades of
the various Zealots had also vanished. None of the Protos seemed to have the slight glow that normally surrounds them. No one was attacking, they were all just staring,
frozen, in the direction of the Gateway. I stood up weakly and looked in the same direction. There, next to a demolished Gateway, was three firebats, eleven marines, and
five ghosts. It was Lt. Chenner’s team! I heard Chenner’s voice over my comm unit, saying, Sorry we’re late pal, we got a little hung up back there. We were ambushed
by a dozen or so Zealots, but took their asses down! The Protos, knowing that their psionic energy was gone, along with their shields, began to flee. Taking my assault
rifle in one hand and my grenade launcher in the other, screaming, "DIE YOU ALIEN SONS OF BITCHES!!!!!" I fired both guns repeatedly into the crowd. The Lieutenant’s
team did the same with their various forms of weaponry. I estimated that nearly fifty or sixty Protos were taken out that night. At least thirty of them managed to escape,
though it was a great victory for the Terran forces. I smiled triumphantly, then sighed as the dropship came from orbit to pick us up. It had been a long night, and I was
ready for a shower and a twenty-four hour sleep.
