Rome has expanded her borders to encompass the known world, and no country or kingdom can truly rival her might. This fact does not prevent armies from trying though, and one of these factions is the Gauls of Germania, a race from the vast forested region to the north of Italy. The Gauls have been a thorn in Rome's side for long enough, and in a series of decisive battles, Rome has nearly eliminated this threat once and for all. All that remains is one last stronghold, guarded by one army. Engaging the enemy on their own terms the Roman legionnaires devastated the barbarian opponents. Although many valiant warriors were left in the snow covered plains, many more pressed on for the final taking of the barbarian capital. The general masterminding this assault, Fabius Maximus is rewarded for his victories with the ultimate accolade, the position of Emperor of Rome.
Fabius is not without enemies though, and through a series of scapegoating and murderous plots, he ends up fighting for his right to survive in a Gladiator camp in the southeast portion of the Roman Empire.
As many of you know, this is the general storyline of the recent movie Gladiator, an excellent film. Very dramatic, full of action, and it conveys a sense of epic battle on the hand to hand combat level. Now, zap to the BR.com community. SlingsNArrows, in a rare fit of brilliance, decided that he would apply the same concept of gladiator combat to StarCraft, as it fits the subject naturally. However, he found that he did not posess the resources necessary for such an undertaking, and soon after this epiphany, he sought after the skills of a more experienced BR'er. Since none of those stepped forward, he was confronted by a slightly shadier, significantly lesser known, and incredibly more misantropic BR semi-veteran, the CynicalMagician. Soon they were a new dynamic duo, a unity of flamboyant forces the world has not seen since Adam West and Burt Ward.
Unfortunately only one pitfall remained. The movie Gladiator was very serious, fairly lacking in humour, and the two writers are nearly incapable of writing something in dramatic prose. Hence, they decided to make fun of the whole concept by BRing a game so inane, there could be nothing else to precede the actual game than SlingsNArrows' very own brainchild.....

It was a sizzling day on the hot marble of the forum, and the sound of young roman boys being beaten senseless by their teachers echoed on the myriad columns of Rome. Merchants preached the beauty of their wares in the streets, and in the corner bars the citizens wistfully drank their money away, dreaming of greater things. With the single-mindedness of a terrier grasping frantically for attention, three women made their separate paths to the Gladiator housing near the Coliseum. All three women were married to profoundly rich, and profoundly old Senators of rome who satisfied their every monetary need.... And nothing else.
They arrived at the main doors at roughly the same time, and greeted each other smugly as they reached the gladiator housing's front door. They all knew they had booked the best gladiator in town for this morning, and were sure the other two were there to see some minor no name who enjoyed stabbing with metal rather than... ahem... nevermind.
They made their way up the stairs together, all licking their lips in excitement about their upcoming "appointment". The first woman stopped in front of room XI, her face already becoming flush. The buxom body of the second woman bumped into the first as she too stopped at room XI. Finally, a woman who had used her charms to play countless men off one another in the political arena skidded to a halt in front of room number XI.
Aaaaah yes. Duecus Bigalus had triple booked. Again. The women glared at each other as the door to room XI slowly opened. Duecus stood in the doorway, smirking, and gently emanating the smell of imported rose petals. The women knew they had two choices, yield to their pride and walk away, or yield to their desire and walk in. Each sealed their decision and handed Duecus a pouch of Roman coins. Duecus led them into his abode, and onto the silk bedding that only the truly poor and truly erotic appreciated.
For the next several hours Duecus Bigalus put on his own extra personal version of the Circus Maximus for the three ladies. When the sundial said noon, they were wobbling out on unsteady legs, and tottering down the stairs like butterflies just released from a stifling jar. Their mouthes hung slightly agape, and they all had a glassy look in their eyes, as if Nirvana itself had just been snatched away from them.
About fifteen minutes later Duecus strolled down the stairs with infinite panache. His toga was spotless, his charming grin present as always. He stopped by the front desk to pick up his mail and asked the secretary there to check his appointments for him. She served him so eagerly and hopefully that he felt sorry for her. Her high heeled sandals and low cut toga... So he did the decent thing and took her into the back room for a solid 5 minutes. He left her laying on a nice couch under the shade of a olive tree, where she slept soundly for the next day and a half. It's tough on a girl, keeping up with The Duecus.
Satisfied that he'd done his kind deed for the day, Duecus made his way back up to his room and began looking through his mail. He casually tossed the love letters from the tremendously rich and tremendously ugly Roman women in one pile, letters from young attractive women in another, lavender scented letters from the current Big Gay Emperor, and finally letters from the not so virginal vestal virgins in the last pile.
The next step in Duecus's daily regime was to affix price tags to each pile. The rich, yet ugly, women received a very steep charge. The pretty women received smaller bills, and to the Emperors letters he attached a little note saying, "Cynical, get a life! If you want me, you need to hand the entire empire over!" Finally he attached small, "Free trial offer" coupons to the Vestal Virgins' letters. He did enjoy a challenge after all.
Soon thereafter, sounds began filtering up from downstairs. The surviving gladiators were returning from the day's tournament. They were all mumbling about how cocky, rude, and idiotic the winner had been. Duecus chuckled, those nimrods thought killing was a skill. He knew better though, getting rich off horny women was where you could really seperate the men from the boys. He walked downstairs where the winning gladiator was loudly mocking all the other gladiators. It just so happeneed that D-Hawkus had been the tournament winner.
Hawkus was proudly bragging to the replacement receptionist about his victory. She was sighing in boredom, until she saw Duecus. Her eyes lit up and she shoved aside Hawkus in her haste to get to Duecus. Duecus, not really wanting to do any more "favors" today, whispered something in her ear and she fainted. He placed her on a couch as Hawkus watched, green with envy. Duecus grinned, "I guess this proves that social skills are what get you laid, not fighting skills, eh?"
Hawkus drew his gladius, charging at Duecus! What happens next? Stay tuned to the next SlingsNArrows report to find out the actions Hawkus takes to compensate for his own impotence! Will our hero survive? Will his body count crest 50 women in one day? Is a body count for dead bodies or bodies slept with?! Will the emperor give Duecus the empire or will Duecus seduce the emperor's mother?! Find out next time!

Map: The Colliseum (New Map!)
Game Style: Brood War
Players:
Kane- - Protoss - Northwest
vs
Phoenix-S- - Zerg - Southeast
CM: And now we're onto the actual game! Finally! My god those little intro stories get tedious... By the way, I'm your host, CynicalMagician (CM), and this is my co-host, SlingsNArrows (SNA).
SNA: Ya, tell me about it. I read this one called Sporff gay something... Man, did that drag on! Welcome to the show folks, we've got a strong match up for you tonight. These kids are real sluggers, the arena is brand new, and the crowd is going wild.
CM: And because this is such a special matchup, we decided to bring out the big guns, and make a brand new map, one the players hadn't ever seen before! Goodness! Not temple? I think half the audience needs a new set of pants as of now!
SNA: Cyn, are those people doing a topless wave?!
CM: Wow! It is! Check out that blonde!
SNA: Whew! If you didn't need new pants before, you will after seeing her.
CM: ANYWAY, the map. It's a pretty basic deal, 128x128, players starting in opposite corners on large plateaus. Each base has a natural expansion and two ways in, not unlike Sling's --- wait, family site. I can't say that. Damn. Separating the bases are a set of cliffs, which border a large expanse. Expansions are at either end, and a few nodes reside in the middle. Two islands are around, and there is a gay observer corner for a few triggers. Too bad I screwed the triggers up. The map will be available for download at the end, and you can check it out yourself.
SNA: What Cyn doesn't mention is that the trigger was to allow the audience to kill the Big Gay Emperor, who is sponsoring the games today. He also doesn't mention that he was the Big Gay Emperor. A little self preservation on my co-worker's part? Can't say I blame him.
CM: THE Big Gay Emperor, meaning no matter how flamingly homosexual I am, I still outrank you, Senator Slings. =P. Now get on with the game.
SNA: Yessir. The gladiators are coming onto the playing field. Kane-, a fairly skilled player who enjoys small dogs and large women is walking onto the sand at the top left start location. Phoenix-S- a BR.com favorite of aproximately the same skill level is taking his position as well. Strangely, Phoenix-S- is visibly sickened by the topless blonde.
CM: That is interesting. Even more interesting is that you forgot to mention that Kane- is orange protoss at the top left, and Phoenix-S- is purple zerg at the bottom.
SNA: Yes, I suppose if you were dense you might find that fast fact fascinating. Here's another fast fact for the dense, both warriors allowed fate to choose their weapons today.
CM: I love those facts. By the way, since you're the one that wrote them down, how lucky would you feel if you got to talk about their build orders? I bet you'd feel pretty lucky, wouldn'tcha? Wouldn'tcha? Yeah, thats right, you talk about those build orders. Work it baby.
SNA: Well, the Kane- man has opted for your typical toss versus almost anything imaginable build order, going pylon, double gate, pylon, and slapping a cap onto his vespene geyser. He then sends a probe to scout out Phoenix-S-.
At the same time the Phoenix-S- is pulling a base out of the ashes, he rolls out the spawning pool carpet, grows some gas sucking fungus on top of his geyser, hatches 6 lings, and sends a drone scouting, which expands near the bottom left obs corner instead of his natural.
CM: At this point, I'd like to take a moment of silence and prayer, as Kane-'s probe eventually made it down to Phoenix-S-'s base, and it frankly got owned. There was no valiance in it's death, but it still died. But, it did produce some vulgar trash talk. Lets take a look, shall we?
SNA: Whew, I never realized probes had speakers attached to them so their commanders could trash talk through them. Moving on, Phoenix-S- grows a Hyldralisk Den hedge on his creep, and takes his natural. Kane- meanwhile warps in a cyber core, another pylon, a forge, a third gate way, and a single cannon. He then precedes to get a Citadel of Adun.
CM: Phoenix-S- by now has let us in on his plan, which is to build a few lurkers, along with a few of everything else. Kane- is obviously going for the ultimo-zerg asskick factor, high templar. Let's hear it for annoyance! A toast! And a pic!

SNA: Aaah yes, Latin. The language of conquerors and empirical sized debauchery. The storm is brewing my friend, I'm just happy our commentators booth is also a bomb shelter.
CM: What you're not going to be please about regarding our shelter is that its air-tight to prevent radiation, and I sweat profusely....
SNA: *clicks his michrophone off* Ok man, what are you doing? trying to ruin us?! If you wanna say stuff like that, turn the mic off. ok?
CM: Uhh, the mic is on regardless or not whether you hit that little gay switch. Besides, I'm not ashamed of my body, I think the human body is the most beautiful thing in the world. By the way, for those that are not interested in my views of beauty, Kane- has expanded to his natural, guarded one of the two chokes with 3 cannons, and has also finished a templar archives.
SNA: He sure has... And by the way Cynic, some bodies are more beautiful than others. Like that blonde... but I digress. On the field of battle, it seems that Phoenix-S- has Kane- sweating profusely as well. Phoenix-S- has strolled 4 lurker's into our favorite biblical character's natural, and is busily raising it to the ground. But wait, my hair is standing on end, could it be? yes, yes it is! one of Kane-'s templar has had enough! The lurkers are no more! Oh god the humanity!
CM: That will leave a stain definitely. Speaking of things that last a while, there was some vulgarity here that I will never forget. It dirtied my virgin ears, and my mind is now polluted.
SNA: I must say, I prefer Women.. uh.. Women Chucks to woodchucks. A robofactory has been laid down, and a shuttle has been built, what could this mean? a probe is boarding and the shuttle is off, slowly moving towards the top right corner and the island expansion there.
CM: Are you even watching the game, or are you playing Quake? Ye gods man, Phoenix-S- just did a major frontal attack on Kane- which caused irrepairable damage, and you're looking at the tar island in the corner! And gimme that magazine!! Anyway, the major attack being 6 hydras and 8 lings, and irrepairable pertaining to 3 dead cannons, and a pylon at 42 HP. The zerg force did this, and was quickly vapourized by a giggling templar.

SNA: Well.. when you look at the island.. you can see that blonde. Huh.. Kane-'s templar giggles like a girl, I wonder what goes on in that archives, eh? Anyways.. during that massively... unimportant attack, a spire has been erected in Phoenix-S-'s main.
CM: In other news, something important is happening! Kane- has decided to counter Phoenix-S-, and with the help of an observer, he has recently discovered Phoenix-S-'s 7:00 expansion. He sends about 12 zealots and 6 dragoons there... I'll let the picture/latin tell the rest of the story.

SNA: When all else fails, quote Caesar. You may notice that not a single templar has accompanied the troops into the field. That may prove unfortunate. While the attack on the 7:00 o'clock was going down, a zerg expansion was going up at the 4:00 o'clock directly below Kane-'s island expansion.
CM: Hmm. Phoenix-S- has discovered Kane-'s island expansion, and he decides that something must be done. He gathers 12 mutas, and flies them into the gauntlet. There are no cannons, and the mutas proceed to smash the probes hardcore. Hey wait, there's something under that shuttle. It looks like some little glowy guy... Uh oh... Thats a templar. I know what templar do. THEY BUST EVERYTHING!!
One storm, ten mutas, and about 60 dirty words later, the assault has failed, the only evidence a new coat of red paint on the nexus. Unfortunately for the templar, he died to the two remaining mutas, posing the question: is it worth dying for a cause?
SNA: Fast facts for the dense. There are 9 templar in Kane-'s main, one at his expansion, and one wandering aimlessly through the no man's land in the middle of the map. Phoenix-S- has just mined out his main, and sends the drones on to help operations at his natural.
CM: Fast attacks for the toss. The force at 7:00 has found it appropriate to try their luck at Phoenix-S-'s main. All the goons and zealots, but still no temps, head for Phoenix-S-'s main, where they manage to do some drone damage until mutas and 4 brand spankin' new lurkers send them back to the shop. Time for another pic! Woo woo!

SNA: Micro could really have turned the tide of that battle, but it didn't, and I don't know a whole lot about the topic of micro, so I couldn't tell ya what should have been done differently. I did see a zealot kick some blue goo seeping out of a dragoon into a hydra's eyes though.
CM: I saw things that no man should ever have to witness in that battle. Like that blonde's boyfriend. =P. Speaking of gay, Kane- has decided that it is time for Phoenix-S- to absorb some homosexuality, protoss style. Whee templar.

CM: After doing a whopping 63 damage to one overlord, the templar retreats, his mission a blazing sucess.
SNA: Yes, that templar did far more good combating the "ovie in the middle of nowhere" threat than it would have done hanging about and supporting Kane-'s troops. I knew that a templar wandering about couldn't be up to any good. Can we take the guy? How big can he be?
CM: What? What the hell was that bit about can we take the guy about? Actually, forget it. In the real life world of Starcraft, Phoenix-S- had recruited a new dozen mutas, and has charged Kane-'s island expansion head on. Without the benefit of the templar, the island exp is dropped quickly. Kane- also makes a couple interesting remarks.
SNA: I meant the blondes' boyfriend, if we both jump him from behind with lead pipes do you think we could take him? ahem... but yes. Out of the stands and onto the field we see some serious building going on in the Kane- camp. Two stargates have gone up, and corsairs are being pumped on a pretty much continuous basis. Not only that, but Kane- is expanding to the bottom left island to make up for his economic loss.
CM: Wow, corsairs pop out pretty quick when you're building them non-stop. I guess anything that gay can't help but be fast. Right Slings? Haha. Anyway, soon enough Kane- has a force of 12 corsairs, and sends them with an escort of 12 zealots at Phoenix's 2:00 expansion, which is unguarded except for a few token lings. The zealots butcher the lings, and proceed to violate the hatchery, drones, and surrounding OL's. Some more random chatter/trashtalk too.
SNA: Ahem.. speaking of Zealots violating things, why are they all winking and waving their psiblades at you Cyn? Look, Phoenix-S- is taking advantage of the protoss inattention to their duties by expanding to the top right island location!
CM: Speaking of inattention, you missed a big gay move, and an attack. Geez man, you're really out to lunch on this one. Oh I see, you grabbed that magazine again. Get your filthy mind out of this trash. Gimme that... Oh my god, that looks like... like THAT BLONDE! WOW! I want this magazine after the game, k Slings? Anyway, at this point, Phoenix-S- had to do something incredibly brave and send some trouble to Kane- to deal with the trouble at his 2:00 expansion.

SNA: Eesh, I don't think feeding muta to corsairs will do much to appease the Kane-ster, and it looks like I was right. Those zealots and Corsairs are moving out towards Phoenix-S-'s main. This could be a game deciding blow folks! Here's a shot of the action.

CM: And after this would-be game deciding blow was shot to hell by devourers, mutas, lurkers, and hydras, Phoenix-S- did a REAL game deciding blow, and decided that the lower island expansion held by Kane- was getting on his nerves. So he killed it with 6 guards, escorted by 5-6 devourers and a couple mutas. Kane-, instead of grieving this loss, decides he must express his sexuality.
SNA: Kane- always was a little odd. To prove just how funny he is, he just now starts to get gas at his natural, which he re-expanded to some time before.
CM: Wow, we really were on the ball for that one, mentioning when Kane- re-expanded to his natural. Hang on *sorts through notes* it was sometime around when he killed the 2:00 expansion. Also, at about the same time he gets gas at his natural, Kane- shows off his seemingly endless coffers by building not 1, not 3 not 4 but 5 new gates in his main. How's that for macro? He has also been warping scouts, and has a couple around. Which could come in handy fighting the zerg air armada which is heading for his natural.
SNA: I'll tell you what could come in handy fighting off that air armada, any one of the 9 giggling templar Kane- has hanging about his main. Oh look there's a queen. Oh dear.. those broodlings giggle worse than the templar! Kane- is marching some zealots directly under the guards and mutas, He meanwhile halts the Zerg air assault upon his main via storm and scouts, but not in time to save his natural. Where'd the blonde's boyfriend go?
CM: To get a hotdog I think.. Go make your move, I wont tell Collsy. As for the game, zealots vs mutas is gay and unbalanced, because they run really fast and mutas can't kill them. Kane- drives this point home by making it to Phoenix's main, losing MAYBE 1 zealot in the process. He also sends his now 6 scouts, and several archons make it in time for some closing ceremonies, after the bulk of the force has come and gone. Here is a pic to help explain the battle a little more. Slings'll come in with some details after you finish oggling it.

*A knock can be heard at the door*
SNA: I wonder who that could be? Hmmm... anyways, we're doing a show here, so on with it. Basically, your typical scout pilot flies rings around a muta, and an archon has got his whole bad ass blues man thing going on, so they owned some of Phoenix-S-'s troops, especially with the support of the zealots. Of course, lurkers love pricking the tender soles of zealot toes, and like most zerg commanders, Phoenix-S-'s solution to the problem was tossing more troops onto the pile. Basically, you can only get so many snarling, biting, spitting beasts thrown at you before you begin to get sloppy. And so the attack ground to a halt and scattered into clumps of skirmishers before finally dissipating altogether. Who the heck is knocking at the door?!
CM: Fine. Since you're not going to get up and get it, I will. Lazy bastard. Hello?
Another voice: Hey. You guys the punks that've been lookin' at my girlfriend?
*door slamming*
CM: Slings!! Get my gun! We've got a bit of a situation!
SNA: *sighs* did you hit on a door to door salesman again?
CM: No, weren't you listening?! It's that blonde's boyfriend! He's friggin' huge! Where the hell is Mr. T when you need him?!
SNA: *digs a gun out of a drawer* OMG, where did you get this piece of crap?! Mark4's gun shop? He musta been pissed about playing on our map and sold you a water pistol! I pity the fool that pisses off Mark4!
CM: Well, this just went from bad to worse... At least this is a strong structure. And I still do have my trusty tie rack. It has a pointy edge on it, and I bet if we had to we could kill him with it. Hey I know, lets find something to fill the watergun with, like gasoline or something, then we can set the guy on fire!! Course, we have no gasoline, just that bottle of Mountain Dew... For now though, do the game.
SNA: Right.... ok. Anyways, I have noticed an interesting phenomenon. There seems to be an observer... convulsing? What do you think Cyn? Bad wiring?
CM: Well, I noticed that too slings, and got a bit of it on tape. Roll 'em boys. Well, roll it Slings. Whatever.

I was unable to contain myself, and so I asked Kane- why there was an observer on a 2 pixel patrol radius. "I can't get it any tighter." There you have it folks, the observer on a two pixel patrol radius in the middle of Phoenix-S-'s main.
SNA: Huh, it looks like Kane- has, for the third time, taken his natural. Well, that's definetly a positive thing, since he has no other source of income. On the down side, mass cracklings are en route, along with a few mutas. The natural falls, for the fourth time, and the critters swarm up the ramp. uh oh, I hear giggling...
CM: I do too! That can mean only 1 thing! Psionic Homo! Queer storm! Gayness attack! Hurrah for templar! Even so, templar can't save Kane- from this onslaught. Squillions of lings attack, along with some guards. The base is razed, and it closes a very inane -- I mean, well played, match. Another good pic came of the last killing.

*the door is beginning to buckle under constant pounding*
SNA: Oh dear.. we had better wrap this up in a hurry. Camera guy, erm... Cynical, zoom in on that blonde!
CM: Thats the first order you've given me in a while that hasn't been related to a hoagie! And I gladly will! She's hot!

CM: As for this game, it looks like its all over except for the scores.

CM: Speaking of scoring, lets have another look at that blonde!

CM: Any last thoughts regarding the game Slings?
SNA: Yes.
1. Do not be afraid to use templar offensively.
2. Protect your expansions.
3. For christ's sake, take your natural.
4. Don't buy guns from Mark4.
*phone rings, Slings picks it up, it is PrincessCollsy. Screaming sounds can be heard coming from the phone.*
5. Do not oggle women when you are being broadcasted worldwide and your girlfriend, and the woman's boy friend are listening.
*door begins to cave*
SNA: How about you Cyn?
CM: Just a couple.
1. Never leave me in such a confined space for such a long time in such heat! I'm sweating worse than Rosanne!
2. My god I wish I had Mr.T on my team right now, he would kick that guys ass right now.
I think thats about it. Oh, wait. Watch out for the croc. That's important.
SNA: The Croc? *eyeing hinges as they rips out of the wall*
CM: It's called a teaser man, for a BR that'll do sometime. Oh yeah, one other thing, I have to do something fairly ironic. There Kane-, you're quoted. Haha. Last laugh. And now I have to do something fairly violent.
*picks up the tie rack and gets ready*
CM: On the count of three, you open the door, and we'll get him. Allright?
* Slings nods, and braces himself behind the door, then yanks it open*
As the large man runs in, the show's airtime comes to an end, and the commericals come on.

The Colliseum - Map Download
CM: Hey, its the CynicalMagician again, just giving a bit of info to anyone who is interesting in downloading the map our gladiators played on, The Colliseum. The version up for download is slightly different than the one Kane- and Phoenix-S- played on, as their version wanted to use triggers. I took all the extra triggers that wouldn’t work, mostly the ones involving my representation on the map, the High Templar hero, and my getting thrown into a pit of wild tigers (zerglings) to make things entertaining. If I ever feel like redoing the map, I'll put up a new version for download on one of my future BR's. As for the download itself, just Save Target As, unzip, and then move the scx file to your starcraft/maps/download directory, wherever that may lie on your harddrive. Hope you enjoy. Click Here to Download.
At any rate though, this whole BR was a helluva lot of fun to make, and I'd like to thank SlingsNArrows for inviting me to work with him, it was a blast man. Also thanks to the players for putting up with a game hosted by me (those that have tried to join my games know the terrors you face...), and for making an incredibly entertaining match. With that, I'll sign it over to Slings, as he can't let me get away with the last word. Slings? Step up to the mic and provide us with your infinite wisdom. Oh, wait, one last thing:

SNA: Well thank you Cyn. You've been a joy to work with, even if I have to follow along behind you and fix all of your many many mistakes. Oh wait.. that was the other way around. Ahem.. good work on killing the boyfriend. Too bad I got the blonde, she joined out tao team The Co-Eds. Look out for my next BR, which will be a collaboration with BackStabbingLiar. We hope to use sound files in all new ways in it, and there will definetly be a zerg soccer bonus pack to boot. Signing off, I'd just like to say that I wuv everyone. Even gay people who thinking SC skills are better than Social Skills. In other words, I even love D-Hawk.
CM: Til next time,
