After a... uh... an unnamed Blizzard Dynasty staff member (or former staff member) met a humiliating defeat at the hands of
the allmighty CPU because of four-Pooling on an island map, which remains unnamed as well... (and contrary to popular
knowledge, it actually wasn't Dire Straits! Read the I Can't Win battle report... and if you've read our staff vs. staff
battle report, you'd know that he is much more strategies than just four-Pooling :)) I took it upon myself to prove that yes,
Blizzard Dynasty staff members do indeed have the skills required to defeat the CPU, or even two. Although it WAS an FFA map,
the two CPU opponents, as you will see, hardly attacked each other, so I could have easily taken them both out in a melee
game.
In the end, though, all I really proved was the stupidity of the CPU.
I was also too lazy to color-code the names in this battle report.
MAP STATS
Name: The Lost Temple (I don't even like it)
Starting Locations:
Terran (me): 9:00
Protoss CPU: 3:00
Zerg CPU: 6:00
12:00 remained free and open to exploitation
I began in the 9:00 location, and after playing TillerMan's ultramegagosu tutorial map, I began to wall in with only ONE
Supply Depot and a Barracks. It doesn't really save money since the second Depot is required anyway :). I proceeded to build
a second Barracks, Refinery, Academy, an Engineering Bay, and a couple more Depots.
Then I noticed that for some reason I didn't send an SCV to scout (not that I to know what the computer was doing anyway :)),
so I sent one. Due to my madd memorization skillz, I clicked on a position on the minimap that would have led him UP THE
RAMP, despite my knowledge that the computer, regardless of race, must have already built an expansion there, with units or
defensive buildings to support it.
I then built two Factories, expanded to my natural, and floated my former wallin Barracks (the megagosu wall-in proved to be
fruitless anyway :)) to my natural, leaving one Barracks in the main base.
At about that time, I noticed that my scouting SCV got up the 3:00 Toss ramp JUST IN TIME to get out of the range of a Photon
Cannon that just warped in. Knowing that there was no way in hell that the SCV could get out now, I sent him to the
bottom-left corner of the base, and began BUILDING A BARRACKS.
Back at my bases, I began my gas and mineral operations at my expansion, and began building a couple of Tanks and Vultures,
along with Spider Mine and Siege Mode upgrades, although I ended not using any mines, because I perpetually kept the CPU on
its toes with Siege Tanks that it couldn't hit.
So on the Protoss main hill, I ended up building a Barracks, a Bunker full of guys, and a Missile Turret. The enemy sent two
Zealots at it in the beginning, but luckily, I stimmed a Marine, put him in the Bunker, and had the SCV repairing it. Once I
had two Marines and two Firebats in it, it was unstoppable to the Protoss.
I then sent a strike force of a Marines, Firebats and Medics, that kicked the Protoss natural's ass. It was mainly to divert
its attention from the operation going on inside the base, since it had already been noticed. Only a few more Zealots
attacked my expansion inside the base, but they were easily repelled by the Firebats.
Although I defeated the Toss natural, it wasn't without heavy losses. In the end, I had only four Marines left, because of
the lack of micromanagement on my part: two Zealots proceeded to kill six Marines that were separated from the rest of the
group, before being quelled by the rest of the Marines with Medic support. All Firebats were lost.
At that time, my front-line Factory had been built and its Machine Shop built, but at that exact time, the enemy Zerg sent a
rather sizeable force of Hydralisks and Lurkers to assault the Toss base. They proceeded to kill the Marines and Medics at
the expansion who were just a bit too late to group with the front-line base (Group Three from now on, with the main base
being Group One, and the natural expansion being Group Two), which would have strengthened my position in Protoss territory.
Unfortuantely, that didn't happen, so I decided to retreat the Group Three buildings to Group Two. If only I had Siege Tanks
a little bit earlier at Group Three...
The Factory was caught by wandering Hydralisks, but the Barracks made it back to Group Two, where it landed underneath a
Bunker that was underneath the first Barracks there, creating a powerful wall-in supported by Siege Tanks behind it and on
top of the cliff to the north.
The Protoss had fended off the Zerg attack, mainly with Photon Cannons, but their Gateways were all destroyed. Miraculously,
my SCV still remained alive, so I began to rebuild Group Three from scratch. By the time the Protoss had enough probes and
minerals to finish their Gateways, I had a Barracks, and a Bunker filled with Firebats and Marines in their territory once
again.
The Zerg at that time sent a couple of Hydralisks and Lurkers in an attempt to dismantle my defensive line at Group Two, but
that proved to be fruitless. Half the force was destroyed by Tanks even before they were in the range of the Bunker, which
quickly wiped them out.
Back at Group One, I had prepared quite a few Siege Tanks as well as Dropships, Valkyries, and Science Vessels. The main
elements of the group (Tanks) would end up being destroyed, but the move proved to be decisive...
I built a Bunker in the southern edge of Group One, filled it with Marines, and sieged up two Tanks beside it. I filled two
Dropships with Four Siege Tanks, and along with three Valkyries and a Science Vessel, I sent them to the small canyon between
my Group One and the Zerg main, where my new Bunker and two Siege Tanks could easily reinforce them. Using the Science Vessel
as a scout, I sieged up the four Tanks in the canyon, and they began firing on the vital Zerg structures that were there.
Meanwhile, I began building consolidating a strike force of Marines, Firebats, Medics, Tanks and a Science Vessel (Army Group
A). And I also began to expand to the closest mineral-only resource node.
At the Zerg main, I destroyed the Spire, Queen's Nest, Spawning Pool, and Hydralisk Den. I then took a risky move and
transported the remaining three Tanks (one was destroyed by a group of Mutalisks, which were in turn killed by my three
Valkyries), up to the Zerg hill, and sieged them up. If I had reinforced that with some infantry, the Zerg main would have
been destroyed then and there. But the bulk of my infantry force was up at Group Two, and I had only a minimal force of
Marines inside Group One.
But the three Tanks did manage to destroy a futile attempt to rebuild the Spawning Pool and Hydralisk Den (the computer's
stupid enough to always rebuild them at the same place...) before being destroyed by a few Hydras that had morphed in.
At about that time, the Protoss CPU was sending out regular excursions of... you guessed it... ZEALOTS, at Group Three. They
were easily dispatched, but Toss was getting on my nerve. I built two Siege Tanks, which destroyed the only Gateway, and
because of the lack of any more Photon Cannons, the base was wiped out, and so was the one Nexus at the expansion.
Because of Zerg's current weakness (ie Lack of ability to train even Hydralisks, I sent Army Group A to attack Zerg's
natural, and prepared a new Army Group B of four Siege Tanks.
The main thrust provided by Group A proved to be too much for the two Sunkens and minimal unit defences of the Zerg natural,
and it was overwhelmed within seconds. The three Hydralisks recalled from the doomed assault on Group Three's Barracks did no
good, as they were wiped out by the rearguard Marines as soon as they were in range.
The Zerg CPU, knowing that it was doomed, had two worthless last-ditch bases in the two corner islands, that I would destroy
later.
Once Zerg's natural was destroyed, I moved my troops up the ramp. Surprisingly, there were no units nor Sunkens guarding the
ramp - there was only a single Spore Colony. The Tanks were sieged up in position to fire on a few Sunkens, and then the
infantry were sent in. At about that time, Army Group B was loaded into Dropships, and was landed on the other side of the
Zerg base, sandwiching the buildings in the middle (Creating a third, northern front would have been overkill, so I settled
for two).
Zerg main was thus wiped out, but they had another base at the natural of 12:00 o'clock (there also happened to be a Protoss
Nexus, Pylon and two Probes at 12:00 main). A force of three Tanks, four Marines (+Medics), and three Valkyries were sent to
12:00 main to deal with the Zerg "threat". The pathetic Protoss base was wiped out immediately, and Protoss was eliminated
from the game. Their tech never got past Dragoons :). I then sieged the Tanks up and began firing on the Zerg "base".
A few Lurkers were dispatched in an attempt to take out my Tanks, but they were wiped out by my 3/3 Marines. The Lurkers were
still at 0/0 :).
Two or three Hydralisks also got up the ramp, but stimmed my Marines+Medics took them out quickly. I also took a few
newly-produced units from my base for a final assault on the Zerg "main". For some reason I never used Army Group A or B
again.
The top-left Zerg base was taken out by a drop of six Marines and two Medics without taking any casualties.
For the final, bottom-right enemy base, I pulled the pimpest play I could think of: Irradiating my own Science Vessels and
sending them to destroy the enemy units. I for some reason didn't notice that all that was left there were two drones and a
burrowed Lurker, that I ended up doing a regular Irradiate on. It was downright pathetic now that I think about it.
For some reason, there were two Spawning Pools in that last base... yet another testament to the CPU's madd stupidity.
So basically, I proved nothing with this battle report. I'm not really even good with Terran, since right after this game I
logged on B.net and got my ass kicked by a Protoss player because I made about six or seven tactical judgement errors that I
would never have otherwise made. One being how I forgot to build the sixth Probe until my first five had collected 200
minerals already... He offered a rematch, and I swear I would've beaten him had I played against him again, but then my ISP
decided to fuck up again, so we couldn't get a connection.
Expect my next report to be about beating an enemy CPU with Zerg with a four-Pool on an island map.
