Prologue
"Magistrate, we've got a problem," said the Adept as he walked into the office, loose papers clutched to his chest.
"What problem?" replied the Magistrate, not moving from the chair in which he relaxed, "the revolt has been put down."
"Yes, Magistrate, but..." continued the Adept.
"The rebels have all been rounded up and sequestered in the Arbitrators' launch. They can't cause
any more trouble." The Magistrate lazily scratched his short beard.
"Indeed, Magistrate, but..." the Adept picked up a page that slipped from his grasp.
The Magistrate rubbed his eyes. "The Inquisition has confirmed that the revolt was not backed by any off-world powers."
"I've read the report, Magistrate. But you need..."
"My son," continued the Magistrate, more than a little annoyed, "there are still Imperial Space Marine unit patrolling the city."
"Exactly, Magistrate. That's what..." said the Adept, breaking out in a sweat.
"Look Adept," sighed the Magistrate, sitting up in his chair. "The revolt has been put down. The Inquisition has cleared us of all
heresy. And the Imperium's finest warriors are paroling the city. What could possibly be the problem?"
The Adept mopped his brow and spoke slowly, "The fifth patrol unit of the Dark Angels is scheduled to camp next to the
thirty-third patrol unit of the Space Wolves...right next to your family's apartments."
"We've got a problem," whispered the Magistrate.
Attack
The evening was cool as Sven moved forward with the other Blood Claws in his battle pack. Once they got to the edge of the
out edges of the water works, they all crouched down. Sven shrugged his shoulders to resettle the weight of his jump pack and
surveyed the area.
The battle pack was position on the edge of the water works. The pump stations and gantries stood like dark monoliths in the
evening light. Steam venting from various valves shrouded everything in cloudy wisps. Not two weeks ago, this area was
crawling with planetary rebels.
Elements of various Space Marine chapters had been dispatched to put down the revolt. The rebels were quickly defeated;
their leaders rounded up and sent to the lower levels of the Adeptus Jurius Reclusium. Since then Sven and his pack, as with
elements of the other chapters, had been patrolling for further insurgents.
That is what brought them all here. Information from a local Municipal minister had informed the Wolf brothers that they would
be encamped near a Dark Angel patrol. This informer, originally from Fenris himself, told the Wolves where their age-old rivals
would be encamped. He also let them know that the Dark Angels were aware of the Wolves' encampment.
Now, in the waning light of this day, the Space Wolves had deployed on the edge of the water works to catch the advancing
Dark Angels. Sven's battle pack was deployed on the left flank. Behind them and slightly to their left was the Whirlwind "Wolf's
Justice". Directly behind them was Cristiansen the Martyr, a Tactical Dreadnought equipped with an assault cannon and a
missile launcher. Cristiansen was attended by his Ironpriest, Irongrim. To the right of Sven's pack was another battle pack of
Blood Claws. To their right was "The Wrath of Fenris", a squad of heavy weapon Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor. Leading
them was Arnie Sacknussen, Deputy of the Wolf Lord Ragnar Blackmane. He was in charge of Space Wolf Contingent and
personally was leading this assault.
Sven's com-link crackled to life. "Listen up, pups," said Arnie, "this is for those of you who have never faced the Dark Angels
before. You all know the songs and the rivalry. Now is your chance to add your own verse. We're deployed on the edge of
these water works. Just on the other side are the Dark Angels. From what I can tell, they were alerted to our advance. From
here I can see a Predator and a Predator Annihilator that has had its sponsons shot off. There is also a contingent of Deathwing
Terminators, all but one armed with Thunder Hammers. Their Captain is also in Terminator Armor as is their Librarian. I also
spotting movement in the highest tower, so I assume they've got scouts too. On the plus side, there's only one Ravenwing
attack bike."
Arnie continued, "This wasn't what we expected, but we will prevail never the less. Blood Claws, you are to move forward and
break through the Dark Angels line. Once through, you are to get into their camp and set up our Chapter Banner. Cristiansen,
Wolf's Justice, and "The Wrath of Fenris" will provide covering fire."
With that, the comm link went silent. Sven knew the stories of the rivalry. He was prepared to fight. But he was prepared for
the Ravenwing. He looked down at the hand flamer the Blood Claws had been issued and wished for a powerfist or melta
grenades. Little use this rabbit-cooker would be against the Deathwing.
A rumble of engines broke the evening air; the battle was joined. Sven and his pack started to move forward, taking advantage
of their cover. Then, on their right a rhino came rumbling up out of the water works. This was met with a hail of fire from
Cristiansen. The assault cannon stripped the Rhino's bolters off and Sven saw flames licking inside the Rhino. It spun out of
control and collided with the gantry in front of Sven.
Behind Sven, Wolf's Justice fired directly at the Dark Angel Librarian as he moved around the edge. All alone, Sven gathered
that the Librarian was up to something. The Blood Claw wished that one of their chapter's Rune Priests had come along.
As they moved forward, Sven saw Arnie shoot off blind grenades from his Terminator armor to slow the Deathwing advance.
Cristiansen did the same to divert the Predator Annihilator. The Wolf Guard stayed steady and covered the right flank. They
were evidently visible to the Dark Angels, for the Predator had moved behind some old ruins and had not moved out. Also, the
attack bike had crept forward, staying well under the overhang of water works gantries; he didn't dare to show his face under
the threat of the two assault cannons and one cyclone missile launcher carried by the Wolf Guard.
The battle was oddly silent. There hadn't been much firing yet. But then
everything happened at once. The Librarian, apparently under the influence of
some drug, charged the Whirlwind like a Wolf of Fenris. As if in concert, the
Predator Annihilator moved forward and fired its twin lascannons at Cristiansen.
The shots went wide of the dreadnought, but the Whirlwind wasn't so luck. As
he rained blows down upon the Whirlwind, the Librarian could be heard
laughing with glee.
An explosion ripped through Whirlwind and it lurched forward and exploded.
Sven's pack was right on the edge of the explosion but unharmed. The Librarian
was now standing in the open. With the departure of the Wolf's Justice, the
psyker had nothing to hide behind. Cristiansen the Martyr, turned slowly and
brought his assault cannon to bear. Sven heard the soft ripping sound of the
assault cannon and saw the Terminator Librarian crumple to the ground. The
eerie laughing stopped with a gurgle.
At this point, the battle went quite again. The Predator Annihilator pulled back
out of sight from Cristiansen. The Deathwing stopped their slow advance. Sven
and his brothers moved forward to the edge of the water works and began
priming their jump packs. All along the battle line, the Dark Angels were pulling
back. Except for their Captain. He raised their green and red standard in the
middle of the water works, claiming it for their chapter. He quickly fired off his
own blind grenades to prohibit return fire.
Then the order came and Sven set off his jump pack. As they rose above the
water works, Sven saw two of the other Blood Claws fall to the twin lascannons
of the Predator Annihilator as it withdrew. When they landed, Sven's pack moved forward and into the camp of the Dark
Angels.
The battle was over; the Wolf Standard was erected in the Dark Angel camp even as the Dark Angels claimed the battlefield.
In losses, the Space Wolves suffered the loss of the Whirlwind and the two Blood Claws. The Dark Angels, however, lost a
full Librarian. Honor had been satisfied; this time in favor of the Wolves. Each contingent would now hold funeral services and
resume their patrols on the next morning.
Praise the Emperor! Praise Leman Russ!
