First, this is my first battle report, and its somewhat obvious….please forgive the lack of quality.
Second, and more importantly, this was a newbie game. Most of the ideas in here really have any chance of actually working in a real game…in fact, doing the opposite of what we did is probably the best thing to do.
Map: Big Game Hunters (no surprise)
Players: Protoss (me) at 6:00
Terran at 3:00 (they were colored white and left early)
Zerg1 at 9:00
Zerg2 at 12:00
(ZERG1 and 2 not actual names, having problems with colors at moment) (warned you about quality of report)
Build Order: pylon, gateway, pylon, forge…..and then cannons…..multiple cannons….cyber core.
I had two zealots and 4 cannons at my choke, and then what I had been afraid of happened- I was rushed by Zerg1. Never was scouted, but they attacked anyway. thankfully, it was only 4 zerglings…one of my zealots took 20 shield damage before they all died horribly.
Then, terran dropped out of the game.
Next, I decided to scout for myself…I took a probe after it finished nother pylon and clicked on a random place on the map… it ended up in a mineral field halfway across the map. So what do I do? Naturally, I build a nexus in the middle of nowhere, and then put up a bunch of cannons.
While I’m setting up an expansion 2 inches away from the zerg base, I get rushed again, this time by Zerg2. Again, no scouting, and the 12 zerglings die to 4 zealots and 4 cannons….
Meanwhile, my probe, after establishing the expansion at Zerg1 mineral only, decides to scout some more. Right into Zerg1 main. I now realize my expansion is in trouble, so I try to keep it safe by attacking with my probe. I evade a few zerglings, then see a problem…. a sunken. So, in a noble effort, my probe charge the sunken. and dies.
I tech up to dark templar, and start producing a small group. Soon after I send my first to my choke, I get attacked again by Zerg2. This time, a group of 10 hydras or so. Again however, my defences hold with only 1 cannon and 1 zealot lost, my dt helping to kill them quickly. encouraged by this, I reinforce my expansion with 2 dt and decide to attackwith them. I find a group of hydralisks sitting in his natural. 3 die before the rest flee to safety. Unfortunatly, he puts a sunken up next to my expansion, on a cliff. I lose a cannon and a pylon, and the rest of my base just is far enough away. Then, Zerg1 attacks me with a whole pack of hydras….unfortunaly, he brought an overlord. trying to save the base, one dt attacks….and dies horribly. Not discouraged, another charges the hydras… and dies horribly. Not having caught on yet, I make another dt and then charge…and it dies horribly. I finally realize my expansion is dead. (only one pylon supporting six cannons, first thing to die). My probes all flee back to my main, where I have a corsair and a scout up.
I finally decide I should expand right next to my base, and set a nexus up at my natural. I put up six cannons, and a templar and a dt for backup. meanwhile, ive decided to go for carriers. Then I see an overlord coming at the one undefended point of my base…worried about a drop I go to kill it. Slow overlord. No drop. he was just scouting me 25 minites into the game. I finaaly built an observer, and found out that Zerg1 have built sunkens everywhere. and now are getting up spores….. my observer is trapped inside the zerg base, and dies quickly.
While continuing to produce more carriers, I decided to scout again. With Mike the High Templar. Mike slowly moves to the middle of the map, and searches for something to storm. Suddenly, an ultralisk shows up… I give him up for dead when I see a line of hydras behind it… running to try to buy time to attack, I prepare to storm something when the Zerg2 army suddenly decided to go right by him. Mike stood and watched as 4 ultras and 20 odd hydras marched by in a straight, very long line, towards Zerg1. nothing but hydras and ultras….this gives me an idea, but I decide to have Mike leave the zerg parade alone and scout some more. Mike finds out that despite 2 or 3 expansions, Zerg2 has few troops left….he comes back to base to report on this fact.
My “plan” kicks into action. I research d-web. build 6 carriers, and keep making more. and warp in a dark archon because I had two random dark templar in my base. Finally, I get ready to attack Zerg2 in one huge cataclysmic battle when all of a sudden he announces he has to leave. and does so. This leaves me with dozens of angry interceptors and 2 corsairs……I don’t know why I only built 2. So, I decide to attack Zerg1, the only opponent left. Two d-webs hover over spore colonies as my cariers and scouts move in. His spire explodes, then his hydra den. I’m still worried abut a possible air force, but it seems my gamble that he only prepared against ground attacks worked. from time to time 3 hydras attack my carrier fleet, then promptly explode. Only three at a time for some reason, and It happens five times. then, I realize where his hydra army went- to my expansion!! I hear the words: “your forces are under attack”, and quickly, panicking, try to find out where. By the time I do, all hydras are dead to my dt pack. oh well. Then, hethrows his finally resort at my carriers. I had been afraid his greater spire might have given him time to built something deadly to my carriers. a huge group of scourge, a pack of devourers. But no, he decides that he can spare no expense, and charges my carriers with…….
8 Guardians.
I try to check if he is hiding something under them, but no. After a valiant effort, the guardians amazingly enough lose to the carriers, his hive explodes, and he says gg and leaves.
Lessons:
1)Scout. scout scout scout scout scout. I was apparently the only one who really did. stupid rushes don’t help much. Not that I should talk….
2) build at your own expansions first, not your opponents. and If you do anyway, don’t place everything under his cliff.
3)scout. with scouting units, like observers. not Mike the high templar. Although he helped me plan my victory, it still was stupid idea.
4) if you place expensive units next to a line of ultralisks that don’t notice it, u can be sure both of you are newbies.
5) SCOUT!!!! if either of them had realized that I was building carriers, they should have built scourge or some other air defence. This, with my knowledge they were fighting a purely ground war, lost them the game.
6)dts lose to hydras and overlords. no matter how many times you try attacking 1 against 10
7)if you build 4 full reavers- this can be tricky- try using them at some point during the game.
8) 3 sunkens, surprising enough, own probes
Thanx for sitting through this, if I do another, I’ll have pictures and names…..and maybe some real sort of strategy.
