Before I start this BR you guys need to know that is actually my first one and so expect a pretty lame one :P. Also I dont have any pics but surely I dont deserve to be given the capital punishment. As a frequent reader of battle reports I have noticed that no BRs are ever writen about custom maps. The obvious reason is that people want to know about what kind of map you re talking about so the are familiar with your difficulties etc. However, I always find it exciting to try out new maps that I have created. I decided to make a small 96-96 map based on the "space" format. It is a 1v1 map with only one expansion to each player. It's a platform surrounded by space. Basically it looks like this: _______ | | _____ |Protoss|_| | | _ | <---Expansion Expansion |___ __| |____| | | | V | | _____ ___| |_ | | _| | | _ _ | | | |Terran | |_____| |_____| I KNOW THIS MAP IS PRETTY CRAP BUT GIVE ME A BREAK PLEASE!! I chose this simplistic form for two reasons: a)I love 1v1 battles b)I hate having truckloads of minerals and gas which is all too often the case with custom maps. The two bases had 18,000 mins and 5000 gas each and the two expansions 9,000 mins and 5000 gas each. By the way, this was the 1.07 version of Starcraft Brood War. Anyway I logged in and found a dude called \/eno(V). So it was Beezwax-{SF} (me) vs Venom. I chose the proud protoss while he chose the arrogant terran hehehe. Now this was worrying me. From experience I know that either you are a kickass Terran player or you are completely crap. There are no in-between situation with terran. Myself, I prefer Zerg but I'm not TOO bad with protoss either. I recon Terran involve way too much micromanagement for my liking. Anyway...I started at north while Venom was south. I started warping in a pylon after my 7th probe which I sent scouting followed by a Gateway, an Assimilator and another Gateway. After a quick scan I found out that Venom had no units and was currently making a barracks. This is my first BIG MISTAKE. I recon if I had manage to warp in zealots and constantly sending them to his base I would probably had won there and then. However I was reluctant to do so as I was scared (and still am) of firebats which cut through mass zealots. I decided to let him attack first and THEN counter attack. I gathered a force of Dragoons and Zealots, backed up by a near by battery and a few photon cannons and waited for the forthecoming attack. As I was about to expand I heard the familiar gauss rifle firing. Here we go! I recon my opponent was not that good a terran player as feared as he should have retreated the moment he so my force. (Let's face it, photon cannons rip apart terran infantry.) After every single marine, firebat and medic was 6 feet below I launched my attack while simultaneously made some stargates, strengthening my expansion and warping in observers. Oh how the mighty fall! The bastard had put a factory right in the middle of that darn narrow path connecting our bases. This resulted in my forced being forced to squeeze in making two single lines which were them easily picked off by siege tanks and (remarkably) spider mines!!! That was a first. I dont recall the last time somebody used spider mines apart from me! (I love those little insects...he he he). I knew I was facing an experienced player. By scouting with my observers I saw his expansions being hideously taken advantage by him! I had to do something now! I started massing dropships from two robotics facilities, made the shuttle speed upgrades and was gathering an impressive force of zealots dragoons and high templar. I had also researched speed upgrade for zealots, all 1st upgrades for ground units and flying ones, psionic storm, and speed and sight for observers. Here we go! I loaded six shuttles full of the "stuff" and hold shift and clicked to his expansion then clicked back to my base, for immediate reloading. My six shuttles flew in as fast as they could, unloading their deadly cargo and then hurrying back to get the other guys. My guys were tearing through his expansion destroying a bunker and killing many marines when BOOM the familiar sound of tank fire twinkled...But this was nothing but a small force compared to the HUGE (and i mean huge) force of vultures, marines, medics, firebats and wraiths that followed. My numerous storms did a lot of damage but were unable to stop the bastards from completely wiping out my force. GRRR... I sent another force this time consisting of loads of zealots, a few dragoons and archons. Alas, a shuttle was blown by wraiths and my remaining forces were crippled by awaiting tanks HIDDEN BY ANOTHER DARN FACTORY RIGHT BETWEEN THE LITTLE CHOKE POINT so my zealots would end up going single filed which they would be pummeled by firebats and tanks. So I sent another force consiting of templar zealots and dragoons. This time followed by 6 corsairs with disruption web researched. I let lose approx. 5 webs on tanks and on a the choke point and managed to kill numerous tanks and infantry. The guy obviously kept comsating my base as he knew what I had as a nice little force of goliaths greeted my corsairs with long range missiles. I was in trouble. The enemy expansion was never captured and I was resource starving. So I decided that I has to make an all or nothing move. Once again I gathered a big (for protoss standards) force of around 24 dragoons, 8 zealots, 1 dark archon (the enemy had ghosts and loads of inflantry so i figured feedback and maelstrom would be useful here), 8 dark templar, 4 corsairs, 2 observers and 4 high templar. This is it. ALL OR NOTHING INDEED. By the way, I had no minerals at all and about 500 gas. I grouped them up and sent them to war ASAP. I saw carnage. My force was up against infantry (loads of it), wraiths, science vessels, goliaths, valkyries and tanks. The bastard managed to sneak a science vessel and EMP my damn high templar rending them useless! I was counting on those high templar! Nevertheless I morphed them into archons ASAP!!! I managed to web a few tanks and bunkers with my corsairs so I had a bit of an advantage...for 30 secs. But 30 secs would not be enough! The battle lasted so long I couldnt believe it! There seemed to be a constant stream of marines charging along with an equal constant stream of goliaths. The guys obviously had quite a few factories and barracks in the depths of his base. My dark archon managed to maelstrom masses of marines, making them easy targets for my faithful dragoons. I also managed to feedback two pesky ghosts so I wouldnt have to worry about any lockdown any more. But I LOST. The enemy was too coordinated and too well defended (I hate bunkers!) for my force to break through. Marine kept blindingly comign forward and slaughtering my remaining dragoons. It was hopeless... I raised the white flag. I think Ive learned a couple of lessons though: -Dark archons kick terran butt. I wish I had made more of them. -Spider mines probably saved his skin early in the game. -I think I should have made more shuttles so I could send them all at once on his expansion. -A huge mistake was not to make corsairs with disruption web earlier. I would take out those tanks so much easier. -Protoss units are SO EXPENSIVE! hehe -Would I be able to sneak in some dark templar earlier on in the game when terran detection is poor? -Science vessels kick high templar butt. I hope you have enjoyed my crappy battle report. Please e-mail comments (good or bad) to Beezzzwaxxx@ yahoo.com
