Welcome to the third of my Battlereports. I wasn’t planning on making a battlereport for quite awhile because it was hard for me to find a truly good game, and it seemed that a good replay would be something I wouldn’t be able to find in a game of my own. So I searched around the net, but the only replays I found were mostly those gay 3v3 shared bases shit or 3v1 comps. Scnation.com’s replay section didn’t have much yet, so I looked around in its affiliates and found broodwar.com. Luckily they had just recently posted their three replays of the week, two TvTs and one PvZ. PvZ was my favorite match up, so I quickly downloaded the PvZ hoping for a good replay. It was awesome, and after getting permission from the website, I produced what you are about to see.
The map is Lost Temple; the contestants are GS012 (GS) vs. [GG8]sVEN@aBs (Sven). I predicted GS012 was a Korean, because GS had the numbers 012, which was a play of words for “eternal” in Korean/English, and sVEN I wasn’t too sure, probably Korean also. GS started Toss at 3, Sven spawned as Zerg at 6.
GS went for a standard dual gate, then started tech to templars. Sven used the extractor trick, early expanded, and then started a spawning pool. It was discovered early due to their positions however, and the scouting probe started attacking it while a zealot was at work. Once the zealot finished it came to help the probe attack it, and soon followed another pair of zealot and probe. The hatchery was down to around 800 when Sven had gathered enough lings (10) to chase away the threat back to GS’s main.

Sven tried attacking GS but a zealot wall was up as GS’s core was finishing. There were a couple attempts to lure the zealots out of the formation, but due to the hold position the lings gave up. Sven continued filling up his natural. GS continually pumped zealots while starting a stargate to harass Sven’s overlords for Sven’s early expanding would’ve left him without anything more than lings. As he started the stargate a wandering overlord came, saw the stargate warping in, and floated off although a fresh goon was soon there to pop it. Seeing the stargate Sven started a hydralisk den and an evolution chamber while rebuilding his overlord and then some. At GS’s base a citadel of adun was started and a templar archive soon after. A corsair was now completed and headed for Sven hoping to catch him off guard. For defense Sven had a spore colony at his naturally while he started missile attack upgrade at his chamber. Unfortunately by the time the corsair came all the overlords were gathered at the spore along with hydras so the corsair wasn’t able to do anything but fly away.
By now Sven had gathered a respectable army of 20 hydra/lings, and headed for GS. GS had started an expansion at his natural along with cannon support plus a dozen or so zealots. The attack would’ve been fatal but due to horrible positioning the zerglings were stuck in the back while the hydras absorbed the damage.
Because of this they were forced to reposition but that wasted too much time and lives so Sven had to retreat. Needing more than this Sven started a lair while pumping hydralisks. Another attack was made this time with 14 hydras but again they were chased away by 8 zealots with cannon support. GS started another forge while researching storm, while pumping zealots with the occasional templar and goon. Sven had hurried his tech to hives by bypassing spire and going with a queen’s nest only, while gathering units at GS’s entrance. He also expanded to the left main and his own mineral only while he added another evolution chamber for quicker upgrades, which was what he needed to be successful at what he was preparing to do. The hive finished as GS chased away Sven’s containment with 15 zealots, 4 temps, and a goon. Now that the containment was gone GS prepared to expand to the top resources by starting a pylon by the top main’s ramp and fortifying it with four cannons. Sven’s units were now bunched at the center of the map while starting an ultralisk cavern. Both sides expanded to their respected naturals while GS also started an expansion at the top main and attacked the western side to get ahead in the game of economy. A couple dozen lings and hydras were at the mineral only but were easily dispatched by getting flanked, 12 zealots from the top, 15 zealots, 2 goons and four temps from the bottom. Sven immediately attacked GS’s force trying to do a little flank of his own, but a nice spread storm along with zealots were more than enough to stop it. . The ultralisk cavern had finished however, and 11 ultralisks were immediately in the works to save the bases.
Unfortunately they were too late, but they met and annihilated the Toss army, completely ignoring the overlapped storms and ramming their tusks into the zealots till there was nothing left. Simultaneous to this event was a drop that Sven was preparing for the Toss north expansion. He had three overlords parked at the top mineral only, and because the overlords didn’t have speed they had to ferry the force (8lings, 4 hydras) to the bottom left of the main. Because they weren’t in cannon range they easily killed the probes and the nexus until zealots came to stop them. Meanwhile, GS sent 6 templars to the 11 ultralisks who were still at the left natural (which was where the battle had taken place) to try to finish them off. .
Incredibly about 8 storms were not enough to finish the ultras and as the templars were killed GS vowed to not make templars again for the game. While that little rendezvous was going on Sven sent two drones to restart the two expansions at the left side. While he started the two hatcheries he loaded up five overlords filled with ultras and lings to kill the top expansions. At the same time GS’s army of zealots were sent to Sven’s main to try to finish him off. The two armies met each other, and GS made the zealots follow the overlords instead of attacking the main.
The overlords headed north, being closely chased, when suddenly they made a sharp turn to the right side main, aka GS’s main, and dropped the cargo there. GS had no time to react, and before he could stop the forces, he was met by a beautiful “ultralisk wall” at the ramp. Yes, it is the soon-to-be infamous Ultra Wall!
Two ultralisks defended the choke while 16 lings were laying the smack down on all of GS’s vital buildings. GS’s zealots pointlessly scurried around at the bottom, until he just gave up and attacked Sven’s mineral only instead while rebuilding all he could at the top main expansion. When the zealots arrived they were met by a couple ultralisks with sunken support. Sven’s lings had finished up the main and were hurrying back along with the ultralisks, leaving GS’s natural intact. The zealots finished off the mineral only plus Sven’s army but retreated once four ultralisks were morphed from the remaining larvae. . Both sides rebuilt, GS going zealot/archon and Sven going ultra/ling.
Remembering the right-side natural Sven attacked it with a couple dozen lings, but zealots and archons denied it and follow it up with a counterattack to Sven’s left side expansions, starting with the mineral only. Sven is seriously weak compared to GS but hiss 5/3 ultralisks buy enough time for him to make reinforcement ultras and stop the attack. After starting reconstruction at the mineral only he followed it up with an expansion to the top left island. GS again attempted to take the left expansions, with a zealot/archon combo. They met Sven’s ultralisks and zerglings near the top-center and both sides continuously retreated and reinforced but GS overpowered due to the strong zealots. They proceeded to Sven’s left mineral only and beat on it a bit until new ultralisks had again scared the force away. Sven tried a counterattack with a bunch of lings on GS’s northern expansion but retreated due to the four cannons as GS started a nexus at the northern mineral only. GS slightly altered his combo at this point by adding Dark Templars into the mix, perfect for the enormous damage it would cause to the ultralisks plus one hit deaths to the lings. Another huge battle ensued at the top center as GS was determined to take the left expansions and this time GS was successful because of his dark templars delivering heavy 49 damage blows. Seeing his situation Sven immediately started mass sunkens at his left mineral only but they fell quickly, along with all of Sven’s west expansions. At this time Sven is obviously wasting away as he started 5 sunkens at his south mineral only to prepare for the onslaught that should and would swing the game to GS's favor.
GS gathered his army: 30 zealots, 7 archons, and ~20 dts, at the center. At the same time Sven was shipping 6 overlords full of ultras and lings to GS’s base. Consequently they met and Sven furiously unloaded his units before the overlords died. Unfortunately, everything died, and Sven’s main was his for the taking. The dts swiped their way through the Zerg base like a knife through hot butter, and now all Sven had left was the two island expansions. .
GS knew this game is his, and mass expanded everywhere. Sven managed to make a hydra den and was pumping lurkers and zerglings for some harassment; clearly it wasn’t over for him. As for their psi, Zerg was 44/130, and Protoss was 142/179. Sven drops lurkers seemingly everywhere at once, killing off probes at the right mineral only, right natural, left natural, and on the cliff of the left mineral only expansion.
. Unfortunately GS had not bothered to remake the observatory, which went down at his main, and was forced to remake them. He was also busy making an army of dark archons, hoping to finish off Sven in a spectacular Zerg only manner. Seeing as how his plans were cut short, he sent a group of archons to the left natural, the cliff, and the right mineral only to finish off those lurkers as soon as the observer had came in. As for the right natural he did a nifty move of first mind controlling the overlord to detect the lurkers, then MCing the lurkers afterwards. During these harassments Sven got a hatchery up at the bottom main hoping to produce units because his money had piled up. He started out with one hatchery, and then nydus canaled his islands and his bottom base together in a nice connection to transfer the units at the island to protect his new hatchery. After making four hatcheries at his main (which are pumping lings) he expanded to his mineral only which had only been 1/3 mined out while attacking GS’s right side natural with a couple dozen lings. They finished it off and started an expansion there. Following up the attack Sven sent more lings to the top mineral only, killing off the probes until archons came and stopped them. During all this Sven had completed a hatchery on the cliff above the left natural, and from it came lurkers that again burrowed at the cliff. This along with lings and more lurkers from the main was enough to finish off GS’s expansions and his archons, which were guarding it. GS was feeling very uneasy and attacked Sven’s bottom mineral expansion with goons, a couple lurkers(He MCed), and DAs. Sven fought nicely with ultras and lurkers, and were able to kill all the units except for the 12 or so goons who ran a bit back. At this point GS acted like a retard and instead of goon dancing he WALKED all his goons in, allowing the hydras and sunkens to take a bunch of free hits. The goons fell without even getting a shot off, although GS managed to steal a drone from Sven during the attack.
GS was now hurting for minerals having only what was piling up before, and Sven quickly counterattacked the left natural (GS’s Zerg base), which was the only source of income left for GS. The zerglings razed it to the floor in no time, and GS spends his last 1k or so on 8 dark templars, leaving him with 140 minerals, 2857 gas, and no source of income except long distance mining (Using his gas mining probes). The dts attacked the right Zerg natural and it fell, but Zerg reinforcements of zerglings followed up the dts and finished them off, rendering GS disabled. Having nothing left, GS left the game leaving Sven the winner. .
This was a great game. The first time I watched it I put it on 4x speed and when I saw Sven winning at the end I was surprised because it all happened so amazingly fast. If you are wondering where the dark templars went they were all turned into Dark Archons which proved to be retarded. The reason for the mass goons at the end was probably because GS thought Sven had changed his main focus from lings to hydras, and obviously hydras < goons. His surprise use of lurkers is what changed the game because they were really tearing it up. Ultralisks seem effective now because storm seems so weak against them, thus they can keep an opponent guessing. Ultralisks can do a lot more than just “absorb damage”. The reason they were made so big was to absorb damage, but I think that if ultralisks were smaller they would be very strong because then they can’t get surrounded as much IMHO. I tried to get a picture of the score but the replay freezes at the end. I even tried redownloading it but still freezes so sorry.
