Terran[3] vs. Protoss[6]: Evils of Harassment
This contains roughly 1.6mbs of pictures, so sit back and relax, go get a snack, whatever works. Welcome to my first BR, Proceed at your own risk :]
The map is none other then Lost Temple. Not much to say about that, except that I find it balanced enough to at least enjoy, though it is overplayed. All my random map games are one sided either vs newbs or random gosus so no such luck today :[
Early-Game: Harassment :[
JaVm-deW randomed Protoss, ending up at 6, while katome (who I hope you are aware is me ;]) chose Terran and ended up at 3. No complaints here, plenty of room between us.
I start with a decent peon clone, while JaVm-deW slips up a bit more, though probably because 6 is the hardest clone with peons starting mineral-side (no room); at the very least I find it so. (I think I'll refer to myself in the third person from now on, it looks neater.) katome has been rallying his SCVs to their respective separate mineral patches, except for his 7th which he grabs and sends down to the ramp to start a wall off with the first Supply Depot. Upon its completion a Refinery was constructed.
Only a fraction of a second before, JaVm-deW's 7th Probe, the Evil Probe, started a Pylon and headed off to scout. The Probe was Evil because on its way up katome's ramp, the first position it scouted, it blocked the SCV that had just finished katome's first Supply Depot... who promptly turned around to head way into his plateau instead of out to scout. The shiney bastard then constructed a Pylon by the depot, and meanwhile back at the Protoss camp a Gateway began.
katome promptly pulled four SCVs off minerals to attack the Pylon (from experience I've found 4 to be the least you should pull off to finish the Pylon in time). Just as the Pylon was about to explode JaVm-deW canceled it... and built another one, which katome started working on again. He canceled this one quicker, and began a third.
This time katome drove off the Evil Probe (who later died to the SCVs), blocked the ramp with two SCVs, and attacked the new Pylon with the 2 remaining SCVs and the one originally intended for scouting, which was discovered vainly trying to get down the ramp. He canceled the Pylon, and katome sent off an SCV to 12 to scout (eventually to find JaVm-deW in the last place he looked) and sent 2 SCVs back to minerals, and used the other two to finish the wall with a Supply Depot and Barrax.
At this point there were 2 SCVs on Vespene Gas (all thats necessary to build Factory immidiately after rax with this build). During this mess JaVm-deW had built a second Gateway and Pylon, and his first Zealot was on its way to katome's ramp.
The first Zealot arrived at the ramp to meet a lone Marine on hold position, who happily fired at the Zealot who retreated to the Vespene Geyser in 3's nat. katome pulled an SCV off minerals and put it by the depot, anticipating an attack. When JaVm-deW's second Zealot arrived, he attacked a Supply Depot with both. The SCV there started repairing, and another one arrived from the mineral line keeping the Zealots indefinately at bay under fire of... now two Marines, with a third on the way. One Zealot died, and the other retreated to the natural Vespene with 14 hp to watch for any offenses.
He returned shortly with two new Zealots, catching katome without any SCVs at the ramp; however they arrived in time to repair the Depot. Two died, and the other retreaded just out of range.
Back at home JaVm-deW had warped a Cybernetics Core and Assimilator with 3 Probes on it, and started two Dragoons. katome on the other hand had started a Starport, now with 4 SCVs on Vespene.
JaVm-deW's newly warped Dragoons promptly headed for the Terran plateau, outside which a Zealot waited. A marine and one two Siege Tanks, one sieged (siege mode had just completed, it was started when the Machine Shop finished) and one not, greeted the aggressors. The other Tank sieged, and one of the Dragoons died to Tank/Marine fire. After two Siege shells were fired, one hitting a Zealot and the other a Dragoon, the force retreated back just out of range of the Tank. JaVm-deW's natural. One last departing shot was made by the Siege tank.
Mid-Game: Wraiths!?
JaVm-deW had two more Dragoons waiting at his natural, where he stationed his force... in defense of a Nexus he just started ! katome is producing Siege Tanks out of one Factory, and Wraiths out of the Starport. An Engineering bay is being constructed; meanwhile the first Wraith scouts out the mains for expansions. JaVm-deW had started... A Robotics Bay !
katome's Wraith checked all the mains and the islands, content perhaps to let JaVm-deW have his natural. katome made his first mistake after throwing down three Missile Turrets around his mineral line: the one he placed at his ramp was right behind the Barrax, which would later prevent his Siege Tanks from leaving until it was destroyed.
JaVm-deW sent four Dragoons up near the 12 ramp, where they waited... and waited... until his first Shuttle arrived. I believe he was busy macroing and building up at his base because it took him a few seconds, but eventually all four were met by two Wraiths intended to scout for expansions ! That was all that was necessary however, the attack was given away. katome unwisely sieged his four tanks, and the Dragoons walked right up to them, however they killed one Dragoon, and the two sieged just away from katome's ramp killed the other 3. Only one Siege Tank was lost.
Immidiately after this, katome felt it was the right time to attack. He sent his 5 Wraiths, 2 SCVs, and 7 Siege Tanks (after killing the Turret T.T) to the slice of land between the South East Temple wall and the water. One SCV constructed a new Engineering Bay to spot, while the other started a Supply Depot that would help protect the Sieged tanks.
JaVm-deW had two Dragoons in the centre of the Temple as scouts, but because of the obscure position the push took they noticed nothing until his four Dragoons at his mineral natural were shot at (JaVm-deW had been building cannons and the odd tech building out here in preparation for another expansion). He ran them towards my tanks, one of which was sieged. katome sieged the other few, and with the help of the Wraiths those four tanks were disposed of. JaVm-deW had attempted a flank using the aforementioned two Dragoons, but he attack-moved them and they were distracted by the floating Engineering Bay until the other Dragoons were destroyed. They died shortly after.
katome started another Supply Depot block and the odd Turret for detection, while JaVm-deW prepared a formidable attempt at an escape. 8 Dragoons, four Dark Templar and two Reavers aided by a Shuttle. He was producing out of four Gateways now. He moved his Dragoons around a bit to perform a semi-flank on the open side of the push, and rushed in. Tanks fired randomly, taking out two Dark Templar and some Dragoons. katome cloaked his wraiths (now numbering 5+) and shift-queued them to the Dark Templar, and then the Reavers. I forgot to take screenshots during the actual battle however :[
Though the force was formidable, katome lost only a Siege tank and Turret, while JaVm-deW lost his entire attack force, including the Shuttle to Wraiths just afterword. His hopes of taking his mineral natural would be put on hold for now. Just before this skirmish katome had been macroing out of one Factory, Starport and Barrax, because he started two Command centres in his main. One was now at his natural, where about 10 SCVs had been maynarded. The Barrax previously for his wallin was landed down the cliff, in front of a new bunker with a few marines in it, and a Turret for detection.
JaVm-deW queued up Zealots 2 deep in his 5 gateways, and had rebuilt his Citadel of Adun and Forge. Zealot Leg upgrades were beginning, as well as Psi Storm. He queued up 4 High Templar (not immidiately, he had been macroing). katome pushed on, moving tanks up one at a time under cover from the Wraiths. The second Command Centre floated innocently and un-noticed to the South East island expansion.
JaVm-deW's second attempt to break out was just before Zealot Leg Upgrades finished. katome was unsieged 3 tanks and moved them just by the 6 mineral natural, while an SCV started a Turret. Several Wraiths (~10) hovered by the natural plateau, to watch for drops and be able to semi flank a force trying to escape. JaVm-deW sent 8 probes in front of his 7 Zealots, but to little avail because 5 Tanks were sieged just in range of the 3 unsieged. Two of them died, along with all the probes. The third one moved back and was ordered stupidly to siege, when finally the Wraiths were summoned. The tank that just sieged died before the remaining Zealots perished to Wraith and (mostly :p) Tank fire.
JaVm-deW had been macroing well during this, with 5 new Zealots awaiting 4 High Templar and another Zealot. katome was still building out of only one Factory and Starport, if constantly. He started a Science Facility and another Factory (Finally!) by his push at the 6 mineral natural. New tanks were sieged forward on arrival, and the Wraiths hovered by the water in the eerie calm. JaVm-deW has been building the odd Photon Cannon around his main as anti-Wraith protection, while he builds Zealots. katome's second Command Centre lands at the Southern island and SCVs are queued, and he starts his first Armory.
As JaVm-deW is preparing to break out with 12 speedy Zealots and four High Templar (one on the ledge overlooking his mineral natural) katome isn't in the best position to hold the contain, as he sent his entire group of Wraiths to scout expansions, and has unsieged half of his Tanks which he has moved forward and is in the middle of sieging one at a time methodically in good position. A Zealot wanders too far forward and is shot by a Tank, ~7 rush forward quickly checked by JaVm-deW. katome knows what is imminent and hastily sieges, which is perhaps not the best move.
The attack is cued by the previously mentioned High Templar on the ledge, who casts a storm on an injured Tank just below. He is promptly blasted to nothing, but the injured Tank too explodes. The 12 Wraiths arrive from scouting 9, which is empty, and start popping undefended probes at JaVm-deW's natural. He casts two Storms, one nailing the Wraiths dead-on, and the other simply finishing the probes for katome; but the damage has been done, one more touch from a Storm and the Wraiths die. JaVm-deW reacts quickly, and sends about 18 Zealots and 3 High Templar forward.
At first both Zealots and Tanks die, but quickly it becomes clear the Zealots are too much. The Wraiths arrive to assassinate Templar, but the targetted one gets off a fantastic storm killing all but 3 Wraiths before dying. No more Templar die before another storm finishes the remaining Wraiths. The last two Tanks do their share of damage, as the one the Zealots occupied themselves with was walled behind a Turret and Supply Depot. katome, however, has forgotten his macro completely and has nothing to send from home. Wraiths and Vultures are quickly queued at home, where still there is only one Starport and Factory. The Factory at the push produces a Tank, which along with an arriving Vulture kills the last Zealot... but the remains of the push cannot be saved, 5 of JaVm-deW's new Zealots arrive promptly, and an Archon just as a Wraith arrives only to turn around and head back. The Zealots raze all remains of the push, depots turrets and Factory. Note: the picture goes in order from left to right first, then down.
Late Game: the Big Batallions Win the Wars
katome frantically throws down two more Factories at home, replacement Supply Depots, and another Armory (as well as an accidental third :[), starting Goliaths in two Factories and Tanks in the third (and original.) The south island is mining minerals at full swing, but still no Vespene.
JaVm-deW sends a Probe to 9 and starts an expansion, which katome forces him to cancel with a single scouting Wraith, and finally begins Dragoon production again. He is the first one with upgrades, now with +1 to ground armor. He loads another Evil Probe into a Shuttle, and sends it to the South Eastern island. Discovering it occupied but undefended, the Shuttle drops the Evil Probe onto the lower ground, where it contstructs... two Pylons ! The Shuttle heads back home for a couple Dragoons. Meanwhile JaVm-deW starts an expansion at 12, this time defended by the Archon and four Zealots that razed the buildings from the Tank push.
The shuttle arrives at the island and drops off two Dragoons, which promptly kill the first Wraith to arrive there. The second Wraith to arrive, however, was smarter, and cloaked. The Dragoons could do nothing but fire upon the new Refinery there. Another of katome's Wraiths is sent out to scout, and meets the Archon at 12. He quickly sends 6 Tanks, 12 Golaiths (with Charon for fear of Carriers) and a Science Vessel. These are now +1 armor/attack, to JaVm-deW's +1 armor/attack.
Simultaniously, katome sends 3 marines to the 6 mineral natural to watch for retaliation, the attack force arrives at 12, losing only one Goliath and forcing JaVm-deW to cancel the Nexus which had almost warped, and 2 shuttles and 4 Dragoons arrive at the South island. The pylon remaining at 12 is quickly razed.
JaVm-deW's Dragoons sit on the low ground firing, only unloaded on the high ground as a Siege tank and two Goliaths of katome's unload. The Tank sieges, and the two Dragoons die quickly (2 SCVs repaired on Golaith under fire). The other two Dragoons...? Mysteriously still in one shuttle. JaVm-deW probably tried to have it unload over a Depot or something :[ The unloaded, at cost of the Shuttle and both Dragoons... One of the Golaiths died, and the Refinery there. Incidentally that cloaked Wraith from way before also finished off the second original Dragoon... Thats one gosu Wraith :]
katome has been slacking on his macro, and quickly queues up some Golaiths and Tanks, and moves out his large army from 12 to the mineral natural at 6 where a Science Vessel preceeded them. The three Marines that had been waiting there were sent in to scout, and seeing an apparently defenseless expansion, started firing on the Probes. The Probes turned to retaliate after one died, losing one more before JaVm-deW's army arrived at the natural and disposed of the remaining Marine.
JaVm-deW has completely forgotten his macro, who can say why. In any case 12 Zealots headed out perhaps to attack, but meeting Golaiths and sieging Tanks they turned tail back to the natural, where the rest of his forces, 4 Dragoons and 4 High Templar waited to fight for their lives. katome sent 3 Marines to scout 9, and finding nothing pressed on with the attack. 12 Golaiths and 9 unsieged Tanks ploughed into the natural, where JaVm-deW kept his forces strictly in check until the Templar arrived. The first Storm killed nothing, but did some damage; the second on top of it killed some Golaiths and a Tank, as well as helping the Zealots to their deaths :[ The Science Vessel that had been brought along cast two EMPs, nullifying two High Templar after their first respective Storms. The two remaining with 200 energy cast two Storms, killing one Tank... but JaVm-deW's mighty army is gone.
katome microed poorly in the face of 4 reinforcing Dragoons and a Zealot, which were killed with heavy casualties; but the 4 new succeeding Zealots were too much for the Goliath and 4 sieged Tanks; but not enough to save JaVm-deW. Reinforcement Golaiths and Tanks arrived, and he conceded the game.
GGs were exchanged, if I remember correctly; at any rate he was gm and didn't flame me and claim I was a homosexual hacker :] Congradulations to a game well played ! Especially early game the harassment made me frustrated enough that I might have lost my concentration. I think lack of good macro lost this game, despite having a decent Gateway count. (I can hardly say my macro was much greater ;]) The final scores were very close, at 109 401 and 100 727.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope you enjoyed it ^_^ (Hope I didn't screw anything)
