Here's my first try at a battle report. Be kind.
Vanilla StarCraft
(Sorry, no pictures)
Map: Lost Temple
Me: (chosen) Zerg 12:00
Him: (chosen) Protoss 2:00
(I don't know what our colors were since I use "Shift-Tab"
to make all the units that are not mine on the mini map yellow)
I started the usual 7-pool rush, but sent my initial Overlord to scout. I parked that hot air ballon right above his peon line and went into sight seeing business.
When the 6 Zerglings popped out, I sent them out to the Protoss base (also turning that just hatched larvae into an Overlord). I took out 3 maybe 4 probes while his initial zealot and probes took out 4 of the zerglings. I headed home to lick my wounds (and hoped and prayed a Zealot rush doesn't immediately follow).
Back home, I had started 2 more drones after the Overlord hatched and made those into Sunkens. When the two badly hurt Zerglings came back into my base, I started 6 more Zerglings (3 eggs)
I waited.
Nothing.
Meanwhile, the Overmind Sightseeing Balloon service was being chased out of the budding Protoss base by Pylons and cannons galore being warped in on his northern border. I waited until the pylons finished and the cannons were halfway through before I retreated. This happened twice.
I rush the 8 zerglings out to his base and think "Turtle... turtle... turtle... turtle..." And low and behold. the zerglings run smack dab into a 4 cannons guarding his choke.
I start up the Extractor and snuck a drone to each of the 6:00 and 9:00 starting positions. I had started the Burrow research and when the drone got to the minerals at 6:00, I burrowed them both.
Back and my main, I started a second Hatchery and a hydra den.
Still nothing.
I started some Hydras and Zerglings when in walks a probe. The little guy didn't have a chance to the sunkens and the Zerglings.
Around this time a couple of Zealots try to sneak into my base, but as the Hydras attack, my oppponent draws them out of harms way and back to his base.
As this is happening, I notice a yellow dot at the 6:00 starting point. I take a look and see a probe standing there warping in a pylon.
I start up more zerglings and wait.
As the pylon warps in, I rush my Zerglings down and halt them right at the ramp to 6:00. I figure, let him start the cannons.
Zealots rush into my base, but are this time held off by Hydras.
Well, the little probe starts the cannons at 6:00. when they are about half way, I attack his pylon then chase down the probe. He cancels the warping in cannons. I wait for his view of the area darken and then start up a hatchery at the 6:00 position. I burrowed the Zerglings at the top of the ramp.
All this time, I'm building drones and hydras and my main thinking of a strong hydra push. I increase the hydra range and speed as well as the zergling attack.
Midgame
All throughout the initial part of the game, I wasn't attacked all too often. Looks like this was a build-up game. So, I started two Evolution Chambers at my 6:00 expansion, got a lair at my main, and another hatchery at my main (3 total). I also started an expansion at the 9:00 position.
All throughout this phase of the game, I kept harassing him with small packs of Zerglings. He has a pretty thick network of cannons guarding the entrance to his main and his natural.
I started two spires at the 6:00 and sunken/spore defense at 9:00. I was attacked at the 6:00 position by a Templar, but by the time I looked, my extractor and drones were dead. I unburrowed my zerglings and killed the offensive templar.
I was stil raking in the minerals and dropped off a drone at the top left island. I tried to do the same at the bottom right island, but found my enemy starting an expansion there. I started up some mutalisks to help take this out. They failed.
I expansed to the natural at 6:00 and moved my now depleted drones from my main over to 9:00.
He tried to attack my main with carriers, but withdrew at the first sign of defense (hydras).
Late game
I started a Ultralisk Den and a Devourer at 9:00. Now, I rarely get to this point in my zerg games - usually I'm wiping up the floor with the blood of my enemies or else I'm being wiped off long before I start these buildings.
So, I add in Ultras to the usual Zergling attack to his defenses.
I tried a drop of zerglings and devourers on his main (got most of his pylons), but since I'm not too used to devourers, only managed to burrow a devourer right behind his arbiter archives. Throughout the rest of the game, I'd forgotten I'd done that.
He had taken over the cliffs above the 6:00 natural and destroyed that base. Then he moved onto the 6:00 aiming solely for the extractor. Then he'd pull away to go after my 9:00. But, again, at the first sign of defense, he pulls back.
I'm rolling in money at this point and start making hoards and hoards of zerglings supported by 3-4 ultras (the Hydra offense I planned wasn't working). They eventually break through and destroy his main.
He had at least 3 carriers and 4 scouts. when this nappened and I'm searching the map for his expansions. All he has are gateways on the two islands (he had taken over the top left island) and the mass of cannons on the cliffs above the 3:00 and 6:00 positions.
Now for the truly horrible part.
It's been a long game (1:30h) and I feel he's been a pretty good player at this. So I offer to ally with him to get it over with. He agrees. At this point, a few seconds before the game ends, I realize that in a 1v1, if you ally, the game is a draw. NOOOO!!!
I played a 3vcomp game of Blood Bath after, but that's another story.
Lessons learned:
1) Keep the pressure on a turtle. While they focus on defense they can't build up a strong offense.
2) 6 control groups of 12 Upgraded Zerglings is a horrifying attack group.
Most importantly
3) Don't offer a good opponent a draw. GO IN FOR THE KILL!!!
