Though some of you may not have heard it, Dragonsven, otherwise known as ThePalisade, passed away on Friday night. Since then things have been a whirlwind of activity around the household and I have felt rather useless. I wracked my brain for some way to honor my brother’s, no, my best friend’s memory. I finally decided to write this final letter to the community he loved so much. His love for Starcraft went beyond the mere game. His true passion was for the people who played it.
Sven started out playing Starcraft in the time honored way. I had been playing Starcraft since the Beta but I could never really get him interested until Brood War came out. He then proceeded to play BGH as TerranAvenger for around a year. Becoming bored, he quickly quit. We moved to a new town six months later. Sven was never really popular in school. He was really shy and since he was so smart some people mistook his shyness for arrogance. Since he didn’t have many friends in this new town, he took back up Starcraft with a new vigor.
During a day of obscure web surfing he found the site “starcraftsilo.com”. One day while surfing the battle reports posted there by AzNSunboy, he saw the word “clan ~nohunters”. It was on that day that he first entered the infamous channel. Sven’s skills had never been tested so severely. He loved it. Hours on end were spent in the channel. He went to battlereports.com and read countless battle reports. Any amount of begging was acceptable to get him into a game that he could observe. This was the beginning of probably the happiest year and a half of Sven’s life. Every night he would get on AIM and tell me of his latest exploits. This doesn’t mean he was obsessed with a computer game, Sven was intrigued by the community itself.
Klietus: Klietus was Sven’s first real friend in ~nohunters. Whenever Sven needed help honing his game, Klietus was always there helping him. They participated in dozens of 2v2’s together and were never beaten but they could not, of course, get a game with the more skilled 2v2 players.
Stalker: Otherwise known as Fourever, Sven always complained that he couldn’t beat Stalker but was always quick to degrade himself in a joke about how he lost to Stalker’s nuke rush on Triad. Stalker was responsible for a lot of Sven’s improvement in the game of Starcraft and was a good friend throughout the experience.
CaughtNaked: CN was the first one to give Sven a leg up in the hierarchy of ~nohunters, the hierarchy that Sven despised. Inviting Sven to join clan [e2] meant more to him than CN can ever really know. Sven just wanted to be friends with everyone.
Mep: Sven met Mep in [e2]. Though they never played 1v1, both would banter back and forth about how the other owned the other. Sven secretly confided in me that he thought Mep could own him for real. Mep and Sven didn’t play often together, usually just a pubbie 2v2, but Mep’s friendship extended outside of Starcraft to the real world where Sven would often ask him for advice. (P.S. Mep, I wasn’t on that list you showed Sven. I asked him to mislead you. Otherwise he wouldn’t have lied.)
Mark4: Sven never really knew Mark4 personally but when Mark suddenly appeared in the channel, he wasted no time in asking for a game. Sven played two dazzling games with Mark, he lost of course, and didn’t stop talking about it for days. Increasing his skill at SC was always an enjoyable experience to Sven and he appreciated anyone who would help. He never refused to help to any of his friends and played many games with them. Of course, he also enjoyed giving out beatings but he would also watch hour long replays of his friends vs comps so he could analyze their weaknesses. Like any true ~nh’er, he began each analysis with “Don’t play comps.”
|]agomar: |]agomar was a big inspiration to Sven. He was someone who had started out as unknown and had worked his way to up to a rater at br.com through hard work and MANY battle reports. Sven respected that and thought |]agomar was just really good manner because he allowed newbs like Sven to observe him and discuss strategy with him. When |]agomar offered to do an ffa battle report with Sven, he was elated. However, a tragic set of circumstances prevented him from completing the battle report, finally culminating in a coma after being hit by a car. However, after he woke up he wrote the battle report under the alias ThePalisade. (Dag, I still have that report if you want it.)
Sync: After Sven’s coma, Sync became one of Sven’s friends. Sven loved observing Sync and MasturNate playing 2v2’s. Sync offered many opportunities for Sven to observe games and Sven was always grateful for it. Even when Sync’s opponents didn’t want observers, Sven would offer a hearty “gl” and leave the game because Sync would never ban him.
-citizenKane-: Near the end of his life, Kane was perhaps Sven’s best friend on battle.net. Sven spoke often about their hilarious bantering back and forth. Recently, Sven had been laughing about their forays back into Diablo I. They really became friends, however, outside battle.net when they played chess and Yahoo! pool together. Ground and a few others also made appearance to play Literati. Kane offered to write a fiction with Sven after Journey and Sven eagerly took up the challenge of ironing out a completely new story line with Kane. (Kane, I have the beginnings of what he wrote if you want them.)
CornStore, Anathema, MasturNate, KrebsCycle: Though in his last days, these four players really despised Sven, Sven never felt any ill-will towards these characters. Rather, he felt stupid for having not committed a few facts to memory that could have avoided the breakdown in his and MasturNate’s and KrebsCycle’s friendships. He tried to put up a brave face but it really hurt him that he had somehow been burdened with enemies of this caliber. He tried to iron it out countless times but none of these players would talk to him. I’m sure if Sven were here today he would just ask that they not exclude anyone else like they did him.
I guess the point I’m trying to get across is that Sven really felt for everyone and was so thankful when he was just offered simple little chances to improve his game. You see, he wasn’t trying to improve his skill in Starcraft for the ability to defeat other people. He just wanted to make more friends. He thought friends were the most important thing in the world. One time in elementary school a kid tipped Sven’s lunch tray into his shirt. When the kid turned to laugh he tripped over the leg of a chair, fell, and chipped his tooth. Sven’s helped him up, asked if he was okay, and then walked him to the Nurse’s.
Sven just really loved people. All he wanted was friends and you guys gave him that. For all of you who were his friends, thank you. For those of you who didn’t know Sven, I’m sure he’d have this to say to you: =]
Rest in peace Sven, 1985-2002.
