Hi all. DD here. This is a continuation of my single fanfic from whenever it was I wrote that first part. That's accessible over here and you probably should read that as I'm sure no one remembers how the story went. Anyway, this picks up right where that one left off.
Praetor Althoris had spent the last two weeks in deep meditation, attempting to locate the source of the ebb he had felt. All he knew for sure was that it was on one of the outlying worlds of the Terran Dominion, hardly anywhere fit for a Protoss warrior in this day and age. It may have been one of the various rogue bands, who had been raiding Terran ships for the last few months as they tried to survive in the harsh aftermath of Kerrigan's rise to power. But something this powerful? It seemed almost impossible.
A prophecy had been made many millenia ago that the Protoss would fall to their knees at the hands of their bretheren, and one of great power would rise to reunite them. They had fallen, the "bretheren" of the prophecy being the Xel'Naga's other creation, and now the sporadic bands and remaining colonies of the once great empire waited for their hero to arise.
Psi testing had gone up in frequency - the prophecy had made it clear that this hero would be a psionic like none the Protoss had seen before, wielding energy that would allow him to singlehandedly turn back the swarms of Zerg that plagued the Protoss's desperate survival attempt. Any particularly powerful Protoss would be closely monitored by whatever powers governed his homeland. The search for the hero had become almost an obsession for the Protoss race.
All the better for a lone Protoss who needed a fleet to go find a man of legend. Strangely, no one else had felt the ebb of energy that had vibrated through Althoris's mind those two weeks ago. It was as though it was a terrible cry for help directed at him and him alone, but the chaos and power of the energy was too incoherent to be psionic contact. It had made the few Dark Archons who inhabited the small moon of Braxis that Althoris lived on seem mentally stable.
Indeed, it had been not much more than raw psi.
Suddenly, something clicked in Althoris's mind. He awoke himself from his trance and stood up, propelling himself out of his chambers and towards the ancient temple that had been erected by the Dark Templar on their flight from Aiur so many years ago. The few Dark Templar who inhabited this world lived their life of seclusion in this temple, only coming out in times of peril or to tame the crazed Dark Archons as they lost control.
Althoris reached out with his mind, contacting the leader of the Dark Templar, Cho'gas.
Althoris, my son...what bothers you so much that you come to us for help? Though Cho'gas and Althoris had a bond between them, the secrecy of the Dark Templar kept them from meeting much. Althoris went to the Dark Templar for council when needed, but even this was rare.
I have a question to ask of you...two weeks ago there was an ebb of psionic power. Did you feel it, O Cho'gas? The Dark Templar leader's mind hummed with excitement for a short while, before forming into a coherent thought.
Yes. Come in, Althoris. Althoris strode through the temple doors, seeing the frail Dark One there, waiting for him. "What is it, Althoris? What is this ebb?" Cho'gas's voice was gravely with age and disuse.
"I feel it may be the one we await. But none of the Templar have felt it, and I feel he may be wielding Dark Templar energies," said Althoris. A general amusement hummed into existence from Cho'gas.
"What irony...the savior of the Protoss race is a Dark One." Cho'gas chuckled. "Go, ask the Council for support. I will provide support if needed."
"And remember, I expect a spot on your carrier." Cho'gas chuckled again, then bid Althoris farewell and vanished into the shadows.
Richard woke up amidst the debris. Sickbay was in ruins, corpses were piled everywhere, blood spattered on the walls, and in the pit of his stomach, though it seemed unfathomable, Richard knew he had done it all. The blood of his friends and crewmates was on his hands.
He stumbled out of the medical bunk, wiping his brow and avoiding the embers scattered on the floor. How he'd managed to annihilate sickbay was beyond him. But he'd seen the glow...it must have been some Protoss trick, he decided. They had created a mind bomb or something and used him as a focal point. It was the only possible way.
Making it into the corridor, he saw that the damage extended beyond the first room. The entire ship was in ruins, it seemed. Automatic containment fields had gone up, but hull breaches were numerous. Richard wandered through the ruins, appalled at the damage he had caused. Suddenly, he tripped over something, falling flat on his face. He rolled over to see what it was. The sight of a disembodied leg, covered in blood and lacerations greeted him. The owner's body hung unceremoniously on the wall, impaled on a shard of bulkhead that had been ripped out, hanging helplessly. Richard looked at the blood covered face.
The captain. Captain McCain's body stared down at Richard, and he flinched. The dead eyes seemed to be accusing him of butchering the crew. Try as he might, Richard couldn't tear his eyes away from the mangled body hanging from the wall. Suddenly, the ship rocked, and the bulkhead ripped through the body further, leaving it hanging from the bulkhead by it's collarbone.
The warning klaxon brought Richard out of his reverie. "Five minutes until containment field destabilization, please move to the nearest escape pod." The ship was breaking down, and if Richard was still in it, he would be thrown into the vacuum of space. He took one last look at Captain McCain and then sprinted down the corridor, taking turns haphazardly until he saw the welcoming door of an escape pod. He got in, fastened the safety straps, and then waited. The door slid shut a few seconds later, and the computer's cold voice played again. "Containment fields destabilizing, launching escape pods."
Richard felt the turbulence of the pod sliding down the release tube for a few seconds, then the smooth sailing feeling of being out of the ship. The lights dimmed as contact with the ship's power was disengaged. Richard sighed and leaned back in his chair.
"Proceeding to Tetrus IV. ETA two hours. Distress beacon enabled." Two hours alone. Richard sighed and closed his eyes. Within a few minutes, he sank into a deep, troubled sleep.
Even with his great standing and the support of Cho'gas, Althoris had had a hard time procuring a fleet for his escapade. That was what the council had called it, but after many hours of argument, he had managed to get a few shuttles and some scouts and corsairs as escorts. A carrier had been out of the question for something as up in the air as this.
He had pinpointed the location of the ebb after leaving the council halls. It was on the fringe of a small system in Terran space known as Tetrus. From what he knew, it was a minor mining colony, not of much interest. What the savior would be doing there was beyond him, but perhaps one of the rogue Protoss bands had needed whatever minerals they could get. Such a small colony would have only minimal defense, after all.
The council had been rather dead set against allowing this mission to be carried out in the beginning. A waste of resources, they had called it. When Zerg attacks were slowly becoming a reality of life in a Protoss colony, an upstanding Templar wanted to take away their primary defense? Even the support of the Dark Ones hadn't moved them. Of course, those old prejudices still stood. Support from the Dark Ones didn't count for much.
The entirety of Althoris's connection to the Dark Ones was unknown to the council, thankfully, or he wouldn't have been able to procure the ships that he had. Althoris had been born not of the Templar family he grew up with, but of Dark Templar. He had been abandoned, then found and taken in by parents who failed to understand why his mental energies differed from theirs so much. When they had finally figured it out, they made efforts to hide it from everyone, even Althoris.
Althoris spent his childhood and youth learning the ways of the Templar, and had come out one of the strongest psionics known in the colony. But shortly after entering the ranks of the Templar caste, he found himself in contact with another force. He could wield psionic energy that none of his comrades could, and it scared him deeply.
It was not until Cho'gas found the young Templar using these energies that the full truth became available to him. Cho'gas secretly instructed him in rudimentary techniques of the Dark Templar, and warned him never to allow the council to know the truth about his origins. Althoris agreed, and learned, and through the integration of these powers became even stronger than before. He followed in Tassadar's noble footsteps, trying to bring the two halves of his race together, but managing only to be a bridge between them.
Cho'gas placed a hand on his shoulder, bringing him out of his memories. "We are about to enter the warp gate." Althoris nodded, then took his seat and fastened his restraints. The shuttle's AI noted this and began to gun its engines, flying into the maw of the gate.
Cho'gas's thoughts slid into Althoris's mind. And so it begins, O Althoris. And so it begins.
