First off, hello I am Mostly-Harmless and this is my first submission to Battlereports.com. I have frequented battlereports.com for over 4 years now but never submitted or commented on anything. I don't know why I haven't but that isn't important anyways. This is a sort of "ripped from the headlines" kind of story, pure fiction focused on real world happenings I guess... Please don't fact check as much of this is not based on fact... note it is fiction.

I've often read about World War 2, families being torn apart, sons being lost and children being killed. Innocent lives taken by the thousands a day, millions by the months. You never think of it as anything but a horrible statistic, rarely do you see it as anything such as "That is one million people, individuals, brothers and sisters" it is just a number that you understand, it means nothing emotionally. I never thought about it like that before...

I was trapped in the school. Beslan... Never would I have imagined terrorists to strike here, then again, in life I try to not imagine any horrors yet to be lived. I was in the halls as screams broke out and gunfire follow. Flashes illuminated the foggy glass of a nearby room's door as bangs of fire roared from the room. I didn't know what to do I stood in shock, paralyzed by my own fears, the door swung open. As a man masked in a black ski mask came out from the door I felt myself die. I felt blood rush from my body, I felt emotions twist and bend, my life was over I thought. The man came out and yelled.

"Get to the gym or die! Get to the gym or die! Get to the gym or die!"

I was still paralyzed... suddenly, I came to. I heard him as he raised his gun, I complied to his order and he and the crying children of the room headed to the gym, he watched me the whole time, gun lined up, trigger ready to react. I could barely walk I was so nervous and all I could do was comply.

As we entered the gym people were already there, some dead... blood freshly spilled was on the gym floor and there lay a teacher. I tried not to look too long I didn't want to acknowledge what was going on... but I knew... and I cried. My tears were shared with everyone else in the room, aside from the men who did this. As I peered around, blinded from my watery eyes, I saw suspicious "things" in the basketball hoops. I cleared my eyes, I looked harder without drawing suspision and I realized why we were in the gym. Wire protruded from the devices and were connected to a piece under one of the terrorists feet. It was a bomb, I was certain.

I felt the very emotions in the hall all over again. I felt myself crying both inside and out. Everything left me, I knew I was already dead. I sat down and spoke with another best my crackled, fearful voice could.

"What is going on?"
"I don't know! I just don't know!"

She cried. It was too early to speak, we were all simply in fear and too afraid of what might be ahead of us. I held her, what else could I do? I needed someone, we all did, I never crossed paths with this girl before but suddenly I felt compelled to hold her. I sat there with her for awhile as she cried as more people were forced into the gym.

A man, pure of heart, stood up and tried to help calm us all down, he was trying to get us to all be less frightened. This was a good man... he was shot. It was horrible right infront of me a man shot, the bullet passed through and hit another boy. Girls were ordered to clean up the blood and as a terrorist passed me by, he pointed his gun my direction, he ordered the girl I was with to go clean up the mess. She didn't get up at first, I encouraged her for her own good and she did so. I never saw her again.

I was alone, curled up in a ball, my mind didn't know what to think but it was thinking everything. I couldn't get a grip on things and another teacher began talking to me.

"Don't worry, I am sure the governement is on this and they are in negotiations right now, I am sure of it."

I didn't respond with words... I didn't know what to say.

"You will be alright child, I promise."

His words were thoughtful, but meaningless to me as I had watched others die infront of me.

We all knew we were dead... we prepared ourselves, we started praying. I prayed, I thought of my family more than anything... I finally understood and put meaning to the many things I read about World War 2. I was living a horror and I finally understood. No longer a statistic to me, this was real. I finally understood and realized I was in the same situation now.

What was once an average Russian life for me was blown up. I was staring death in the face. It creeped all the closer as one of the bombs was detonated. Screams already ringing out grew in amplitude. The wall collapsed, shrapnel flew and many died. I couldn't believe what had just occured, I felt my spirit leave my body, I thought I had died... I was good as such anyways. I watched as the many innocents lives were taken.

Blood was everywhere, arms, legs, heads sticking out. Some completely dissected from the body. I couldn't bare what I was seeing and my stomache unleashed a torrent of blood and food. I cried more than I ever had after that. Friends, teachers, all innocents wiped out in a fury. Those that survived and were crying out from the pain of a piece of shrapnel or a collapsed wall on them were shot. I looked away as long as I could but I couldn't help but watch.

I didn't know what to think or do... I sat there and cried for awhile... we all did as orders rang out to shut up or die rang out. We tried our best, it was impossible.

Shots rang out, an example was made. These heartless bastards did not know any human traits, they were ruthless and careless. They had no worry of who they were killing and what it would do to families. I sat there and gathered myself best I could.

I looked around all of the attention was focused elsewhere, I decided to run for it. I ran out, I ran as fast as any man wanting to live could have ran. I jumped out of a window as shots rang out. Two stories I fell, never fearing the fall at all... I landed and my legs felt broken but I got up on them and ran anyways. Shots rang out from the roof and the window. I didn't think about anything but running... it didn't matter where as long as I was safe. I ran and suddenly I was hit in the arm... I did not stop to look, I kept running as my arm bled. I was so fortunate that the special forces team was there, they took me in and I felt safe.

I was treated for my wound and I told of what I had seen. Soldiers eye's teared up... I did not see it as weakness, I saw it as compassion.

There were over 1,200 people in the gym of the school, 70% children. Over 200 were found dead after the 3 day stand-off... some are still yet to be found.
