Well, I got online and did my usualy search for any of my friends to see if they were online. Well, nothing came up so I decided to play 1v1 on one of my favorite maps: Mausoleum.

Well, a guy named IceClaus comes in and we both select Zerg. I was on the left, he was on the right. After seeing in action and hearing comments on how to play Zerg vs Zerg, I decided to go lings and Mutas. I was beat by this tactic many times, and I have used it to win also.

I send my Overlord to scout the top, then right position. When it reched halfway to the top, I sent my second lord to the bottom. This way, I would find him pretty easily. I do my normal build early on. I make a pool at 7, Overlord at 7, and 6 lings at 9, followed by another 2 drones and a second Hatchery. My Overlord finds him. I discover he is paranoid. He made 2 sunkens, and a third on the way. By this time, I have an extra hatch to his 1. I make my third hatch and start getting gas. I see he already got gas and his his third hatchery up, after mine. I move my overlord a little south, over the cliff looking over his base. I see he has Hydra den. I tech to lair and get some Mutas. I have now, about 24 speed upgraded lings. I send them to his natural expansion to see whats up after I get attacked by 12 Hydras and a few lings. I find his Hatchery almost up. I start attacking. As soon as I wipe out the Hydras there, I start killing it. But soon reinforcements arrive and Im pushed back. I notice he made 2 sunkens there after the hatchery was formed.

Now here is where he game gets weird. I have about 6 Mutas and I send them to kill some drones. I find his chain and start killing some miners. I am pushed back by about 30-40 Hydras. I look at his chain and see about 2-3 drones per patch. I look back at my base and see about 1.2 for each patch. Now I know Ive lost the game. Soon he comes with about 40 Hydras and wipes the floor with me. I had about 30 lings, but they died before they could even reach his Hydra line. I ask for rematch. He says ok, but we never speak again, mainly because of the lag on B.net.

Well. Ive got my butt kicked. I learned about a year ago to make at least 2 drones for each patch. But somehow, over the months, I make less and less drones as time goes by. This was the error in my ways. I decide to use this lesson in the next game I play.

About this time, B.net is relly starting to get messed up. My friend, omnipresent_one, is online, but we cant speak to each other. After trying to join each others games and relogging online, we finally end up in a game on the same map. We do this to finally talk to each other and find out whats up with the lag. Well, I tell him about my defeat and how I got defeated and he laughs at me. Usuaully we talk in a game then agree to a 2v2 and make another game. However, he changes his race to Zerg, showing me he wants to prove to me that Lings and Mutas beat mass Hydras. I draw Zerg, and the game commences.

Omni and I are at about the same skill level. When we play games, he usually saves my ass and ends up beating me in points. I'd say, about 3to1 games he beats me in points. I dont know how effective points really show how good you are, but it is an indicator.

Im start on the left spot again. I later find he is in the top spot. I tell him I was going to use the exact game style and tactics that Iceclaus used against me. He tells me I will die for chosing that road. I get 2 sunkens, then a double hatch, then another sunken and gas. Every so often, I make some lings and I make more and more drones than I usually do (which is really good, since I usually dont have as much as I should have.) I get my third hatch and start pumping out Hydras. I have, for defense, 3 sunkens backed up by 12 lings. Eventually, I upgrade my Hydras range and speed. I have about 20-30 Hydras when I go scout. To my shock and surprise, I see about 50 lings and 12-15 Mutas standing at my door. I know this battle will show who is right. He attacks me with all hes got. When the blood clears from the ground, I am left standing with 2 sunkens and about 5-8 Hydras. During the battle I constantly made more units, and that saved me. I scout him and find he expanded to his natural. I make more Hydras and attack it. I use about 12 Hydras with reinforcements soon coming. I raze the expansion. He sent in Hydras of his own, but mine are better upgraded and mine lived. He said he accidentaly sent them in without using attack+move. Now I know Ive won. I send in more units and eventually I win.

Now Im confused. Ive been beaten by lings and Mutas badly when I went for Hydras. Is it just the player skill? Well it cant be, because I beat omni and him and I are about equal. What is it? What tactic is really the best for Zerg vers Zerg? Omni says Hydras work on that map because it has lots of money. He wanted to play again on Temple, but I declined because I wanted to play a 2v2 and try it out. Since it worked for me, and against me, Im sticking to Hydras now on.

What is your input? What really works? In the first game, was it just me not having enough drones? I cant tell. Sorry for no pics.
